Өндөр Гэгээн Занабазар (1639-1723) хэмээн алдаршсан анхдугаар богд Жэбзүндамба хутагт нь Далай лам, Банчин Богд хоёрын шавь болсон тухай 1698 онд бичигдсэн түүний намтарт тэмдэглэсэн байдаг. Гэтэл 1639 он гэхэд Манж, Төвд, Монголчууд аль аль нь Дотор Азийн газар нутагт эрхшээлээ тогтоохын төлөө тэмцэж байсан үе тул Чин улс бүрэлдэн тогтоогүй, Далай лам улс төрийн хүчээ аваагүй байсан энэ үед Халх монгол хаадын хийсан алхамуудыг дүгнэж, Жэбзүндамба хутагтуудын түүхэнд болон хүрээ хийдийн урлаг, соёлд хос ёсын сургааль гол үүрэг гүйцэтгэсэн талаар энэхүү илтгэлд өгүүлэх болно.

ACMS Virtual Speaker Series: The Importance of “Dual Rulership” in the Art and Culture of Ikh Khüree

Synopsis: In 1639, while the Géluk School of the Fifth Dalai Lama and Qing emperors vied for supreme authority in Inner Asia, Zanabazar (1635–1723), a young descendent of Chinggis Khaan, was proclaimed the new Jebtsundampa ruler of the Khalkha Mongols. His biography, written in 1698-1702, describes Zanabazar as the disciple of the Dalai and Panchen Lamas of Tibet. Over the next three centuries, the ger (yurt) erected to commemorate this event would become the mobile monastery Ikh Khüree, the political seat of the Jebtsundampas and a major center of Mongolian Buddhism. This presentation will discuss some examples of art and architecture in Ikh Khüree that illuminate the key role of the Mongol concept of dual rulership (khoyor yos) in the history of the Jebtsundampas.

About the Presenter: Professor Uranchimeg Tsultemin teaches Asian art history at Indiana University’s Herron School of Art and Design, where she is also the Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Chair in International Studies. She is an active curator of Mongolian contemporary art since 1997, and has published six books in Mongolia, two major publications in the United States as well as several research articles in peer-reviewed journals internationally. Her most recent publication include an edited volume Buddhist Art of Mongolia: Cross-Cultural Connections, Discoveries and Interpretations (Cross-Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review, No. 31, November 2019) and a monograph A Monastery on the Move: Art and Politics in Buddhist Mongolia (Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2020).
