A national call for transformative local solutions

Are you a part of solutions working to address challenges in your community? We want to hear from you! The Canadian Urban Institute and the University of Toronto’s School of Cities are running a national call for local ideas that work, to identify effective approaches to solving place-based challenges.

This Sunday marks the final opportunity to submit your solution. Don't miss this chance!

Projects must already be underway or implemented in some form. Please only submit initiatives in which you or your organization have been directly involved. We’re looking to spotlight a wide range of efforts from across Canada—no project is too big or too small. If it’s making a difference, we want to hear about it.

Why participate?

Submissions will be reviewed by a dedicated team who will evaluate the measurable impacts of proposed solutions and consider policy implications.

Selected participants will be invited to participate in one of our regional roundtables, organized across the country in Fall 2025 with local partners and leaders.

Leading solutions will be invited to Ottawa for an all expenses paid trip to share your solution at the annual State of Canada’s Cities Summit this December.

Better Places for a Better Canada:

Leveraging the Local

Each December, the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) brings together hundreds of urban professionals, policymakers, business leaders, community advocates, and academics at the State of Canada’s Cities Summit to assess the health of our cities and shape their future.

In 2025, Canada faces a critical inflection point, as persistent issues like housing and affordability converge with infrastructure gaps and the need to establish a cohesive national economy.

These uncertainties demand not just better management, but an urgent need for transformation. For urban champions—those committed to the future of their places—this is a rare opportunity to invest in proven solutions that work together to build a better Canada.

Save the Date - Tickets Coming Soon!

The third annual State of Canada’s Cities Summit will spotlight what’s working—the local innovations, frameworks, and policies that are already making a difference—and identify opportunities to scale.

This year’s theme, Better Places for a Better Canada: Leveraging the Local, invites urban leaders from across Canada and beyond to explore scalable models that can help build stronger, more resilient communities and contribute to building a stronger national economy alongside other national priorities.

In a country defined by vast geography and complex, interconnected challenges, join CUI in focusing on small-scale, made-in-community solutions proven to make an impact and poised to drive change in cities nationwide.

Gather on December 3–4 in the heart of our nation’s capital for two days of bold ideas, practical solutions, and cross-sector collaboration.
