WHY DOES THIS QUESTION MATTER?For roughly the last 150 years, modern science and medicine have increasingly approached life through a materialist lens: if something is real, we expect it to ultimately have a physical explanation.
But human experience includes things that aren't so easily reduced to measurements: joy, love, inspiration, intuition, awareness and our sense of being conscious at all.
For many older philosophical traditions, consciousness wasn't an accidental byproduct of life. IT WAS FUNDAMENTAL TO LIFE.
So perhaps the more personal question is this: What matters most to you?A body that is physically intact and functioning?
Or your ability to experience joy, love, inspiration, clarity and connection within that body?
Richard Lee explores this question, and why it matters to CHI's approach to consciousness, technology and well-being, in our latest article. |
