Subject: Revive Upper Town: Revitalizing Our Community Spaces!

The Upper Town area from Mount Joy to League Street boasts some of the oldest & most historic buildings in Knysna.

Over time, the pavements have become neglected & the dense woodland behind the residential area has attracted an increasing number of homeless people, further exacerbating the litter problem.

In June this year a team of local residents decided to take matters into their own hands as part of RKs’ Pavement Proud initiative. Headed by staunch Revive Knysna & Keep Knysna Clean supporter Tracy Statt, the group began an extensive clean-up operation, beginning with the arduous task of physically picking up rubbish & cutting back overgrown plants & shrubs in & around their own properties.

Their project has now extended to creating a firebreak in the woodlands & removing alien species, under guidance of the local fire chief Ian Bezuidenhout & Nana Joubert of Pledge Nature Reserve. Given the ever-present risk of wildfires, the advantages are obvious & the clearances are now making the area less attractive to homeless people.

Using the local neighbourhood watch group as a means of communication, Tracy rallies her ‘troops’ every Monday morning & organises the weeks’ activities. In addition to keeping the streets clean & tidy, many volunteers have undertaken new planting around their own homes & have tackled the overgrown & unsightly banana tree at the front of Telkom’s Queen Street premises. They were delighted when Telkom itself stepped in to help.

Tracy explained that the group has no funding but individuals have donated funds when needed:

“We’ve been able to pay for trucks to remove the rubbish bags & several residents offer the services of their gardeners on an ad hoc basis. One of our supporters, Phil Golson, regularly provides us with equipment & manpower which is greatly appreciated.”

In just three months, these dedicated residents are well on their way to uplifting the whole neighbourhood & have inspired both residents & businesses to support the Pavement Proud initiative.

Are you involved in a similar project, or thinking of starting one in your neighbourhood?

If so, we’d love to hear from you.

Four years on - and still busy!

The comparatively settled winter weather has provided an opportunity for a major maintenance programme. Now four years old, Revive Knysna continues to seek out new areas in need of upliftment whilst revisiting existing projects.
