Starting in 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries like the U.S. will need to apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) before entering Italy or most European countries.

This is not a visa. It’s a quick online authorization tied to your passport.

Once approved, it allows multiple entries over a set period of time, so you won’t need to reapply for every trip. The process is designed to be fast, but it’s still something you should complete ahead of departure—not at the last minute.

For most travelers, this will feel similar to the ESTA system used when entering the United States.
