I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying.
–Andy Dufresne, The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Do more than just exist. We all exist.
The question is: Do you live?
Well, if you are one of the few living your best life, then stop reading. You're elite.
Now, if there is something missing that may help you on your path to living your best life and you can't quite figure out what that might be, here are some ideas to get you moving in the right direction.
Consider. What can you do—starting now—to start "living" a little better?
"Control the controllables." We've written about the value of controlling only what you can—namely attitude and effort.
Do something that "scares" you. Don't put your life in mortal danger, but get away from your comfort zone. "Unmask," in other words.
Walk the walk and talk the talk. Be confident in your beliefs and own them. Never feel forced to explain yourself when standing up for the truth. The "other guy" is the one who usually has it out for you or your beliefs.
Focus on the next step, not the whole mountain. One foot in front of the other. Baby steps, as Dr. Leo Marvin might have said.
Prayer. It is simple and natural.
The Good Doctor, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, once asked his readers to ponder:
"Who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived, or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?"
"Happiness" is amorphous and perhaps a poor benchmark for a life well-lived, but the point is nonetheless made.
Mere existence is no way to go through life.
