Many creatives feel flak when they choose writing over social obligations, or paying for a class instead of buying something for the house. Women, especially, get the message they are being selfish with their time and resources when they choose something they love over serving another person.

What I've discovered is that I'm a wonderful person to be around when I'm taking  so-called selfish time. However, when I'm not writing, creating, playing, and exploring, I am starving my true nature, and I grow cranky, frustrated, and impatient; and this bleeds into my relationships.

Living my most creative life blesses others. Last month, I had the joy of teaching in Yosemite National Park, sitting at a table prompting writers, against a backdrop of soaring ravens and roaring waterfalls. 

Last week, at the Compose Conference at Clackamas Community College, I taught a workshop completely of my invention. It stands in contrast to early teaching days where I tried to produce topics that fit in. 

The most generous thing I can do is to make my writing and art a priority, defying the old, tired voices that accuse me of being selfish.
