CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY ON NOTICE THIS WEEK!

URGENT -- The Tennessee Firearms Association's "Constitutional Carry" bills has been put on notice for this week (SB1483 Green - HB1748 Mattheny).  SB1483 is on notice for Tuesday, March 8 in the Senate Judiciary.   HB1748 is on notice for Wednesday, March 9 in the House Civil Subcommittee.   Last week, we learned that the NRA has also finally come out in support of this legislation.

If verbal commitments hold true, the Senate bill's main obstacle may be Senate Judiciary Chairman Brian Kelsey who has been instrumental in killing other strong pro-2nd Amendment legislation in the past such as Senator Beaver's SB250 that would have strengthened the Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act.

Everyone is encouraged to contact Senator Kelsey's office and request that he move the bill to the full Senate floor and that he personally speak and vote in support of the bill.  His contact information is:

Sen. Brian Kelsey
301 6th Avenue North
Suite 7 Legislative Plaza
Nashville, TN 37243
Phone: (615) 741-3036
Fax: (615) 253-0266
sen.brian.kelsey@capitol.tn.gov

On the House side, HB1748 is expected to be heard in the House Civil Subcommittee.  This is the same subcommittee in which the constitutional carry bill by Rick Womick and a permitless open carry bill by Micah VanHuss were both killed last year.  The key members for purposes of this bill who must vote yes on this bill are Mike Carter, Jim Coley, and Jon Lundberg.  While we initially had verbal support from all three of these men on this bill, we are expecting an amendment that was likely written by either Rep. Lundberg or Rep. Carter (or both) that would add back TDOS regulated training, background checks, some type of "card", a state database and other elements that essentially make it just another permit system.   Please call and encourage these legislators to vote "YES" to send the bill forward but without amending it.  You can get their contact information on this Legislative page.

In addition, call your House and Senate Members and insist that they immediately co-sponsor this legislation - HB1748 and SB1483Alert your legislators that you want the bill as filed by the sponsors and without the committee amendments that put this process back under the control of the Tennessee Department of Safety.

If you don't know your House or Senate Member's name or contact information you can get it at this Legislative lookup page.

Legislative Status Report
The table below contains a list of legislation that TFA is tracking. This is not the entire list but only those bills which have had activity in the last 7 days.

The bills marked in Green are supported by TFA, those in Blue are being watched but TFA has not taken a position, and those in Red are opposed at this time as written.

Please review these bills carefully.  Feel free to go to the TFA Facebook group and ask questions or advocate for or against the bills you like.

Make the time to communicate with your legislators. Call them and ask questions.  Ask them to sponsor bills you like or appose the ones that you think are not constitutionally sound or, if sound, good public policy.

If you do not already know your legislators or have their phone and email numbers handy, you can get this information on the Legislature's "Find my Legislator" page.
