Subject: SFMA October Monthly News

Manufacturing Day℠ is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Manufacturing Day occurs on the first Friday in October — this year Manufacturing Day is Oct 6, 2017. In Florida, Governor Scott has declared the entire month of October as MANUFACTURING MONTH.

Manufacturing Month is also an opportunity for manufacturers invite their communities — including students, educators, businesspeople, media, and politicians — to their facilities in a collective effort to educate visitors about manufacturing career opportunities and improve public perceptions of manufacturing.

Since MFG DAY’s inception in 2012 by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Florida has had the distinction of hosting more events in celebration of manufacturing than any other state in the USA. This year – in light of recent hurricane Irma, Florida is changing the theme of Manufacturing Month. This year focusing on manufacturers helping manufacturers recover after a storm that affected our entire state. For more information on Manufacturing Month please call June Wolfe at 954-801-6770 or write Please send your recovery stories to for reporting to the NAM.

Individuals and businesses who suffered uninsured or unreimbursed disaster-related losses can choose to claim them on either the return for the year the loss occurred (in this instance, the 2017 return normally filed next year), or the return for the prior year (2016).

Choosing to take the deduction in the preceding year may increase the tax savings from the loss and may enable a refund from IRS before filing the tax return for the year the loss occurred. The taxpayer can elect to claim the loss last year (on either an original return or an amended return), and can generally expect to receive the refund within a matter of weeks. This can help with cash flow to pay some of the repair costs.  Read more

CareerSource Broward is urging local employers to take advantage of its On-the-Job Training (OJT) program that aims to help businesses develop and train new employees, as well as their existing workforce. OJT provides a unique opportunity for individuals who already possess some job-related skills and knowledge to learn as they earn. By participating, employers also benefit by being reimbursed up to 75 percent for the participant's wages during the training period, while still having the services of a full-time employee. Check out this informative video to learn how your company can take advantage of this great opportunity to defray the cost of training for new hires.
