View this email online if it doesn't display correctly
Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday as we encourage health in the summer.  In honor of the walk the Good Samaritan took toward Jericho, we encourage you to walk to church next Sunday.  Recognition will be given to the oldest walkers, the youngest walkers, and the walkers that hiked the furthest!

Come be renewed by a love and compassion that breaks down barriers, heals hearts, and builds peace.  See you Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Today we welcome Pastor Paula Stecker as our Preacher and Presider. Pastor Paula is an ELCA pastor with a heart for congregational life, multicultural ministry, and social justice. She and her husband, Carl, raised their daughters as they served as missionary nurses in Central Africa. After returning home and studying at LSTC, she was ordained and served in Pennsylvania and in Haiti. Pastor Paula is an Associate with the Kaleidoscope Institute (www.kscopeinstitute.org) is working to help our congregations increase their capacity for intercultural communication.

We celebrate a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School at Pilgrim and partnership with Luther Memorial Church!   We enjoyed learning together with over 85 children and youth, and thankful for the 25+ adults that served as volunteer leaders. We are especially thankful for all the little ones… 34 of our participants were under the age of 5! Special thanks to Pilgrim’s Chris Wallis and Luther Memorial’s Deaconess Claire for their amazing dedication, creativity, crisis management and joy in Jesus. It was such a blessing.
Next Sunday we will be celebrating the Baptism of Theo Leber. Theo represents the fifth generation of the family touched by Pilgrim's ministry. Please join us in celebrating with them.

Welcome Ms. Kristen Stone and Ms. Kathyrn Allore!
We are happy to announce the hiring of two new teachers to replace Ms. Huelskoetter and Mrs. Daczyszyn, who retired this spring. We welcome Ms. Kristen Stone as Pilgrim’s 1st/2nd Grade Homeroom Teacher. Ms. Stone has 20 years of teaching experience and understands the workshop process of teaching reading and writing, which Pilgrim uses successfully. She taught 1st grade for 7 years in Redford, Michigan;  Pre-K for 3 years in Sanford, Florida, as well as 2 years in Redford, Michigan. Most recently has taught 1st grade at Agassiz Elementary and 2nd grade at Burley Elementary in the CPS system. She has also worked as a private educator. Ms. Stone is committed to weaving Christian values into her teaching and is an active member of her church. We are confident that she is a good fit for Pilgrim and will embody Academic Excellence with a Heart. Ms. Stone has a Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College; a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Michigan-Dearborn; and a certificate for ESL teaching from the American College of Education.

We also welcome Ms. Kathyryn Allore as Pilgrim’s new 2/3 homeroom teacher. Ms. Allore is a native of Michigan and has taught for two years at Trinity Lutheran School in Utica, Michigan. She holds a Bacherlor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University, from which she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Ms. Allore was a 2nd grade homeroom teacher, but also has experience teaching Kindergarten, 1st, and 4th grades. One of her greatest passions in teaching is using the workshop method for teaching, reading, and writing. Ms. Allore is looking forward to joining the Pilgrim congregation as part of her move to Chicago. She has a strong interest in coaching volleyball. Ms. Allore’s colleagues describe her as being thorough and committed to her students. She is eager to learn and is always willing to adapt methods of teaching in order to meet individual student needs.

SENT TO SERVE
Block Party Team Forming- As you all know, our annual block party is a wonderful annual event that helps draw the Pilgrim community together (Hot Meals/School/Worship Community/Neighborhood) and is a wonderful way to embody our mission to gather, prepare, and send. We are looking to form a team to put on a wonderful party on Sunday, September 18th. We are in the process of setting a planning meeting... stay tuned for details! If you are at all interested in helping, please contact Renee at the church office at churchadmin@pilgrimchicago.org to be added to the Block Party Team email list.

Do you have any books you would like to donate? We would like to offer the hot meals patrons and Sunday morning visitors the opportunity to take/have a used book to read. We will use the hard cover books for this program and donate paper backs to the Veterans Hospital. If you have any books you would like to donate, please put them on the counter in the annex (the room off of Maring Hall) and we will make them available. If you have any questions, please contact Deb Suhajda. Thanks for your help!

Thank You to The Pilgrim Community from Karen Huelskoetter
I want to extend my deepest gratitude and delight for your kindness and recognition on Sunday, June 12, before, during, and after the worship. It is an extreme honor to work with you now in our ministry and mission of Gathering, Preparing, and Sending and during the past 26 years. This amazing community has been my family, my support, my workplace, and my home. I thank God for each and every one of you and all of the opportunities we have had to bring His peace, justice, and love to the world. Working at Pilgrim in the classroom has been a true passion of mine; the professionalism and “master teacher goal” of the staff and leadership have always been at the forefront. Being a part of the music ministry has been a heartfelt joy throughout the years and, of course, working to empower children to lead worship is one of the best memories.
I pray that Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School will continue to build, grow, lead, create, and inspire spirit filled leaders who will let their “light shine” throughout the community and the world!
Sincerely and gratefully,
Karen Huelskoetter

Take Jesus with you! This summer, we invite everyone from Pilgrim to participate in a fun, faith-filled project called “Jesus with Me”! Inspired by Ms. Huelskoetter’s “Flat Kid” project. In the back of the Pilgrim’s sanctuary, you will find a half sheet cardstock with an image of Jesus. Here’s the information as we invite you to participate: Take Jesus with you this summer! Color it, make it your own! Take a picture with Jesus wherever you are, with whoever you’re with, doing whatever activity, trip, or service. Upload them to Facebook or Twitter at #Pilgrim with Jesus or send them to:pastorkristian@pilgrim chicago.org Prizes will be given in the fall to the 10 best pictures! And we’ll enjoy a slideshow in church in the fall!

Thank you for your Prayers—Debbie Schulz has been in our prayers for several years and she is now cancer free! Praise the Lord.
