Subject: This Week at Pilgrim

Pilgrim Announcements
March 1st, 2015

Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday as we explore the words of a man who is simultaneously complimented and condemned by Jesus (Mark 8:31-38) and as we receive the encouragement of a testimony from a son of the congregation who is coming home to share the dramatic difference Pilgrim.. and God... has made in his life!

 Join us at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Lent at Pilgrim 2015 ‘Living Prayers’
Join us for a wonderful time of growth as we learn to be "Living Prayers" in these 40 days of Lent!

Each Wednesday, we gather at 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. for a community dinner for all ages, followed by an interactive prayer/service activity that will draw us closer to God, to one another, and the world!

This week, join us as we write letters on behalf of those who are hungry and poor in our world through the witness of a world renowned Christian Advocacy organization, "Bread for the World."

We also recommend a book for your Lenten Journey: Learning to Pray Again: Peace and Joy Through an Ancient Practice  by Michael Rinehart on Amazon.com, either as an ebook or as a hard copy as we explore being "living Prayers" throughout Lent.

World Day of Prayer Service
Join us for a special and deeply moving "World Day of Prayer" Service on Friday, March 6th at 7 p.m. at Pilgrim.  We will be joining together with members from Luther Memorial Church and others as we engage in a world-wide movement for prayer and peace that originated with a group of prayerful women in Bahamas.   It is a very calming and renewing experience!
Pilgrim Lutheran School Learning Fair
Do you know someone who might be interested in having their children attend Pilgrim Lutheran School?  Please invite them to come to the Pilgrim Learning Fair this coming Tuesday, March 3rd at 6:30 p.m.  They will enjoy a performance from Pilgrim's Band, from the School Chorus, from our Recorder Group, and even a "Where the Wild Things Are" Musical Drama.   All are invited!
PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
MOPS is a morning group for moms. Discussions and speakers focus on relevant, important, and interesting topics. MOPS usually meets 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. at 4332 N. Winchester Ave. Join us for the next meeting on March 5th. Childcare available on-site!
Prayer Ministry
Join us for prayer time at the parsonage every Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (4332 N Winchester Ave)
Bible Discussion Time: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
Volunteer Training
The Salvation Army (5020 N. Pulaski) is hosting free Volunteer Training on March 28th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be breakfast and lunch provided. Join us for this invaluable training designed to equip volunteers from churches, community groups, and local businesses to work with vulnerable seniors and caregivers in the community! Includes training from well-known gerontology experts in the field.
SENT TO SERVE
Get Involved at Pilgrim!
Want to help us celebrate? Are you ready for a new service project?  Please join us on Monday, March 2 at 7:00 in church parlor as we make plans for Pilgrim activities and service projects that take place outside of worship.  We will be discussing the 2015 Block Party as well as Seasons of Service projects for 2015.  Come with your ideas and get ready to make a difference while also making some new friends!
Hot Meals PLUS is still in need of drivers to deliver hot meals to shut-ins on Saturdays.  E-mail Janet Taylor at jkstay@aol.com or call at 773-777-4052 for more information.  Thank you.
First Sunday, Feed the Hungry
Did you know that on the first Sunday of each month our ushers take a special collection of donations in support of local and world efforts to feed the hungry? Whether you want to support the Pilgrim Saturday Hotmeals program or one of several other worthy missions, you can join in. We invite you to use the special envelopes provided in each pew, check off one of the designated missions listed, enclose your donation of any amount, take the envelope with you when you go for communion and simply hand the envelope to the usher.

THIS SUNDAY
Prayer for this Week
O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life. Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Readings
Genesis 17:1–7, 15–16 (NRSV)
As with Noah, God makes an everlasting covenant with Abraham and Sarah. God promises this old couple that they will be the ancestors of nations, though they have no child together. God will miraculously bring forth new life from Sarah's old womb. The name changes emphasize the firmness of God's promise.

Romans 4:13–25 (NRSV)
Paul presents Abraham as the example for how a person comes into a right relationship with God not through works of the law but through faith. Though Abraham and Sarah were far too old for bearing children, Abraham trusted that God would accomplish what God had promised to accomplish.

Mark 8:31–38 (NRSV)
After Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus tells his disciples for the first time what is to come. Peter's response indicates that he does not yet understand the way of the cross that Jesus will travel.

In the past, our Fund-a- Need portion of the auction donations have gone directly into much needed projects for our school and our children. Over the 10 year history of Fund-a-Need giving,  we have raised funds for iPads, the Computer On Wheels, technology improvements, desks, a sensory table for preschool, and pull down shades to help darken the room for classroom work.

After careful consideration for the auction this year, the newly designated FUND-A-PROJECT has been established with the concentrated goal of improving and renovating our school playlot and play deck. This renovation will establish a more safe and child friendly environment that will enable our children to have additional opportunities for open space play. It will also create an aesthetically pleasing outdoor space that would allow for both active and non-active recreation! Please consider donating to this wonderful cause during the live auction portion of our auction event!
