Subject: Super Showdown

Pilgrim Announcements
February 1, 2015

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, most of America will be watching the Superbowl at 5:30 p.m.... but where will you be at
8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.?

The best way to get ready for the big game is to renew your Spirit in worship!

Did you know the Bible has a few big showdowns of its own? We'll explore some Biblical clashes and reflect upon what they reveal about our daily lives... and what is possible for our future... see you Sunday!

GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Installation of Mrs. Bilisie Bekele as Pilgrim Ministry Associate
This Sunday we install Bilisie Bekele into a volunteer position as a Ministry Associate.  Bilisie is a long time leader in the Mekane Yesus (Lutheran) Church of Ethiopia, and is the wife of Pastor Lalissa Gemechis and the mother of son Homey (age 7) and Wada (age 3).   She is a nurse, an administrator, and most recently served as Program Manager for Canadian Christian Children’s Fund, overseeing services for 10,000 Ethiopian Children.  She will be working out of the church office approximately 15 hours a week, and her primary responsibilities will be Grant Writing and Alumni Relations.  She is also in the process of joining Pilgrim as a new member.  Please introduce yourself to Bilisie and welcome her to Pilgrim!

PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
A BIG THANK YOU to all the families who participated in the High School Information Night at Pilgrim. The 12 teens on the panel provided straight-from-the-source information on everything from how to choose a high school to how to juggle homework and extracurriculars. It was awesome to hear from such poised, thoughtful, intelligent and entertaining kids! A special thanks to our panel of recent Pilgrim graduates: Luke Allingham of Amundsen IB; Emma Barnhart of Northside College Prep; Joey Bergren of Jones College Prep; Jack Bergren of Lane Tech; Ryan Harnish of Lincoln Park; Elizabeth Howaniec of Whitney Young; Lila Knapp of Payton College Prep; Elizabeth O'Conor of Northside College Prep; Tonya Saiki of Von Steuben Scholars; Gavin Swartz of DePaul College Prep; Mikaela Uddfolk of Jones College Prep; and Tristan Uddfolk of Lane Tech! Special thanks to Stephanie Zimmermann for so expertly coordinating this event!
Prayer Ministry

Care Ministry
Team There will be a meeting of the Care Ministry Team after church this Sunday at 12:15  p.m. in the Narthex. Anyone who is interested in visiting people who are homebound or hospitalized is invited to join us. Please contact Judy Daniel or Claudia George with any questions.
Bible Discussion Time: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
First Communion Class– Begins in February
We invite everyone who is in 2nd grade or older to participate in our upcoming First Communion Program, which will be beginning with an Interest meeting on February 4th. The interactive class is focused on helping us grow in our relationship with God. We will cover the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the 10 commandments, and the meaning of the sacraments.
Confronting Pharaoh Training
We pray every week: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…” But how can we live that prayer? Many of us are blessed to give money to charity, but what if we could do something more. What if we could let our lives, not just our money, be part of the solution to a safer and more just city?
Join us for a two part training called “Confronting Pharaoh” that is rooted in our Christian faith and located right here in our neighborhood!
  • When: Part 1:  Sunday, February 22 from 1-4pm, Part 2:  Sunday, March 22nd from 1-4 p.m.
  • Where: Ravenswood UCC (2050 W. Pensacola Ave, Chicago)
These trainings will be lead by Community Renewal Society www.communityrenewalsociety.org For more information contact: Ryan Wallace, (312) 673-3852 rwallace@communityrenewalsociety.org

SENT TO SERVE
First Sunday, Feed the Hungry
Did you know that on the first Sunday of each month our ushers take a special collection of donations in support of local and world efforts to feed the hungry? Whether you want to support the Pilgrim Saturday Hotmeals program or one of several other worthy missions, you can join in.

Consider an Offering to Hot Meals
The increase in guests to the hot meals has led to increased expenses for food and supplies (not for the volunteers… they work for free) Currently, our Hot Meals fund is in the red. This ministry makes such a big impact and touches so many hundreds of lives every month!  So if you would like to make a special offering to Hot Meals, please go to tinyurl.com/give2pilgrim and in the “other” box, type “Hot Meals” and then indicate the amount you would like to give.

THIS SUNDAY
Prayer for this Week
Almighty God, you gather the whole universe into your radiant presence and continually reveal your Son as our Savior. Bring wholeness to all that is broken and speak truth to us in our confusion, that all creation will see and know your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Readings
Deuteronomy 18:15–20(NRSV)
Today's reading is part of a longer discourse in Deuteronomy, an updating of the law for the Israelite community as the people wait to enter the promised land. Here Moses assures the people that God will continue to guide them through prophets who will proclaim the divine word.

1 Corinthians 8:1–13 (NRSV)
Paul is concerned about how some Corinthian Christians use their freedom in Christ as license to engage in non-Christian behavior that sets a damaging example to other, impressionable, believers. Christians have a responsibility to each other that their behavior does not cause a sister or brother to sin.

Gospel - Mark 1:21–28 (NRSV)
The story has barely begun, and already the battle is joined. Jesus sides with humanity against every force that would bring death and disease. These forces recognize Jesus and know what his power means for them. This, however, is only the first fight. The war will go on much longer.

Groovy Gala & Auction—Mar 7
Sponsorship Opportunities—Last year we instituted a new level of support and it really helped us to bump up the fundraising at the auction. This is a great way to show your support and impact great cause- a Pilgrim Education!

We are committed to making this year’s event an even bigger success and need your help. Please consider sponsoring Those 70's Shows at the Host level as a family. Your $500 contribution includes two tickets to the event (a $150 value) and your family name will appear on all auction posters and announcements. It is an excellent opportunity for Pilgrim families to support the event and help make Those 70’s Shows a financial success. And remember, your Sponsorship is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
If you own a business or have a great employer who may consider a sponsorship, please reach out. We can provide you with necessary information or answer any questions that may arise.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to families who have donated already! Remember, our deadline for donations is February 1st (this coming Sunday!) so please get those into the office. It has a huge impact on the auction and fundraising the auction team is able to achieve with all of you helping!
