Subject: Prophecy on Super Bowl Sunday

Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,
As we head toward Super Bowl Sunday, everyone is trying to predict who's going to win. Sometimes we think about the word "prophetic" in a similar way.
But true prophecy isn't focused on predicting the future... it's about God speaking into our present. As we explore the encounters Simeon and Anna have with baby Jesus in the temple, we will discover the ways God is being revealed to us today. Join us Sunday at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.!

Alfred Lange, age 83, died Saturday morning, January 25, after a long illness. Long-time members will remember Al as a former Pilgrim church member and active school parent. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 1, in Elk Grove Village. Al’s beloved wife, Martha, a hemi-plegic, died about a year ago after being cared for by Al for two decades. Are you looking for something to donate to the auction? Why not consider buying a gift card? Some of the fast food restaurants and/or movie tickets can be put together by the auction team into baskets or neighborhood packages. Prices range from $5 to $100 (quite a price range). We will be selling Sunday, Monday and Friday of this week.

Our Prayer for Sunday
Lord God, your loving-kindness always goes before us and follows after us. Summon us into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of goodness that come through the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is Malachi 3:1–4: This reading concludes a larger section (2:17 - 3:5) in which the prophet speaks of the coming of the God of justice. Malachi looks for that day when the wondrous power of God will purify the priestly descendents of Levi who minister in the temple at Jerusalem.

The Gospel reading is
Luke 2:22–40:
This story is a study in contrasts: the infant Jesus with the aged prophets; the joy of birth with the ominous words of Simeon to Mary; the faithful fulfilling of the law with the presentation of the one who will release its hold over us. Through it all, we see the light of God's salvation revealed to the world.
