GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
The Altar Flowers, Sunday, are given in memory of Charlotte Thompson, by her daughter, Myrtle Thompson Montag. June 27 would have been her 97th birthday.

Sign up for Vacation Bible School - Our theme is “A Mighty Fortress” and will be the week of July 17-21. VBS is for kids ages 4 through Grade 5. Older kids, youth and adults are encouraged to volunteer as helpers. The more the merrier, it's fun for all of us! Registration for both students and volunteers is now open via a link on Pilgrim's website: http://www.pilgrimchurchandschool.org/church/index.php
Questions? Contact Chris Wallis cewallis1949@yahoo.com

Vacation Bible School Volunteers needed - In addition to a number of positions for group leaders and helpers we need a leader for the Games portion of the program. This entails leading groups of kids through approximately 20 minute segments of active outdoor play. The curriculum includes suggested games or you can come up with your own activities. Please contact Chris cewallis1949@yahoo.com if interested. VBS is scheduled for the mornings of July 17-21.

Let's celebrate America and the opportunities it offers. Join the Bethany and Pilgrim communities as we welcome our Burmese refugee family for a true American tradition: a July 4th picnic and fireworks display at Winnemac Park. We will gather at the southeast corner of of the park, which is accessible from the north-south streets (Seeley, Hoyne, etc) that end at the park, beginning around 6 p.m. Bring a dish to share and the beverage of your choice (I don't think city parks allow alcoholic beverages), along with a chair or a blanket. It's an event for the whole family: there is a playground at the southwest corner of the park for the kids, and plenty of space to run around or toss a frisbee. Stay as long as you'd like, but some of us will definitely stick around for the fireworks, which usually begin around 8:45 or 9. If you've never experienced the Winnemac Park fireworks, you're in for a treat!

This will be the first opportunity that our family—Mom Setara, 17-year-old Dilnara and 6-year-old twins NorAlia and NorFatima—will have to meet the friends who have supported them during their transition to Chicago. Questions can be directed to Judy Beaupre (jhbeaupre@yahoo.com) or Becky Gillespie (beckygillespie@mac.com).

We hope to see you there in your red, white and blue!

Celebration of Rev. David Langseth’s 50th Anniversary of Ordination - Sunday, July 16th- Please join us for the a special celebration in honor of Pastor Kristian’s father-in-law, Pastor Anna-Kari’s father, David Langseth. MISSION MOMENT at the METRO SYNOD ASSEMBLY
Delivered by Pastor Kristian Johnson on 06.10.17

“Let there be Light”

Mission isn’t about bringing our gifts to needy people. It’s about letting the light of God’s love illuminate the gifts that each community has, no matter what culture, place, education level or background we come from. For 18 years, my wife, Pastor Anna-Kari, and I have been leading mission trips to accompany El Sinodo Luterano Salvadoreno, the Lutheran Church of El Salvador. We go every summer, and the congregation I currently serve, Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School, is partnering to bring solar electricity to rural homes in El Salvador.

El Salvador is a country in Central America that has many challenges. Still deeply affected by a brutal civil war that lasted from 1980 to 1992, many resettled refugees still have no running water or electricity.

The gift of a solar panel allows Salvadorans to better utilize the gifts they have in abundance: an exemplary work ethic, intelligent and talented children, and SUN! Lots of SUN!

The impact of installed solar panels on rural communities is dramatic: Now children can continue to read and do homework past 6:30 p.m. And, a solar panel brings phone service to a community, since they are able to charge their phones!

We have already installed 40 solar panels in El Salvador, we are raising money to ship 60 more this summer.

We are so thankful for the privilege of coming alongside our Salvadoran brothers and sisters as they shine the light of Jesus love in their homes and in their community!
