Pilgrim Announcements
August 23rd, 2015

Dear All,

As Jesus and his followers were going through intense disruption and disappointment, Peter says to Jesus, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."

The words of Jesus do prepare us for eternity... an awesome thought!

But they also speak to us in the here and now.... join us this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. to be present to what Jesus has to say to us, for the here and now and for the hereafter!

-Pastor Kristian

GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Back to School Sunday/Blessing of Backpacks
Join us on Sunday, August 30th at 9:30 a.m. as we say prayers for all students going back to school.  We invite all children to bring their backpacks to school so they can participate in a special blessing of backpacks.    Each child will receive a special gift as well!

Pilgrim Fest!
Mark your Calendars and make plans to celebrate life and Pilgrim on Sunday, September 13th for our annual “Pilgrim Fest” Block Party - sponsored by Thrivent Financial.  We will begin with an outdoor worship service at 10 a.m., followed by  food, live music, entertainment, kids activities, and fun to go around for people of all ages!   Please look for further announcements with volunteer opportunities to make this day a success!   During the 10 a.m service, we will be officially installing our Pilgrim School Staff!  A special thank you to Shellie Riedle and Anne Barsano and the In-reach Committee for bringing this together!
PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
Good news!
Starting on September 6th, Pilgrim will be providing a learning environment for two 2nd year seminarians from LSTC (Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago) preparing to be pastors:  a newly married couple named Hans and Marissa Becklin.

Marissa was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa where her faith has been nurtured since birth in a medium-sized Lutheran congregation. She graduated in 2014 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where she double-majored in Religion and Psychology and met the love of her life, Hans, who shared a love for hymns and bad puns. Marissa enjoys playing the saxophone and piano, writing, biking, drinking coffee, watching PBS, and reading.

Hans is a native of south-central Wisconsin and a life-long Lutheran with experience in rural and urban congregations. He graduated in 2014 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he majored in History and met the love of his life, Marissa, while both were leaders in the College Ministries program. Hans loves reading, hiking, art, cooking, baking bread, singing Bass in choir, and listening to NPR.

Please join us in welcoming them to Pilgrim during their first Sunday, September 6th at 9:30 a.m.

Sunday School Begins!  Sunday, September 13th
Calling all children!  Join us on Sunday, September 13th for a Kick Off to our Fall Sunday School Program at 9:15 a.m. right before the block party.  We will have activities and crafts and a bible lesson to get our kids ready for the big day!

Facebook Announcement!
Hello everyone!   We are clarifying the purpose of our Facebook pages as we seek to improve our marketing and communication efforts.

“Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School”  is now our primary Facebook page for more frequent "day to day" posts about Pilgrim for active participants in the church and school.  You can also “check in” on this site and, when posting pictures online, you can post to this page.  Please make sure you like this facebook page.

The former page, “Friends of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School” has now been changed to: "Friends and Alumni of Pilgrim Lutheran School"  to help us communicate with those who are no longer directly connected to the school through a current attending student, but who want to maintain a connection to the school.  Please direct our alumni, parents of alumni, former staff and friends of the school to this page.  Thank you!

SENT TO SERVE
Hot Meals
Most of the ten teams are well-staffed, but we always need substitutes.  Contact Janet Taylor if you are interested in being a substitute or would like to help in keeping the pantry well-supplied.  Contact Janet Taylor at jkstay@aol.com or (773) 777-4052
Tuition Assistance Appeal
The time has come to lift up among Pilgrim families, members, friends and alumni our Tuition Assistance Campaign for the 2015-16 school-year.  In our mission to provide academic excellence with a heart, Pilgrim is blessed with many gifts from many people. Some have enough to pay tuition fully; some share gifts of service to offset part of their tuition costs. All have the desire to provide the best education possible for their children.  Please watch for a mailing to come out shortly, or, contact Principal Comella or Pastor Kristian for more information.

FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
Gift Cards will be sold on Sunday after church and on Monday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. throughout the summer. Please contact Anne Barsano (cbarsano@aol.com) with questions.
Flea Market
We are considering having a Flea Market on November 7th to benefit the Tuition Assistance Program if there are enough people interested.  Spaces will be $25 or $30 with a table. As usual we will have a section for Pilgrim sales.  Please let Anne Barsano (cbarsano@aol.com or 773-472-6037) know by October 2nd if you are interested in your own space or if you could help with a variety of jobs.

Magazine Drive
Our Magazine Drive will take place in early September or you can go online to www.gaschoolstore.com and order any time.  Our school number is: 2633014.  Remember: Pilgrim earns 40% of your order in profits!

Play Lot Construction is underway!
Play lot renovation is moving along!  The old cracking asphalt and concrete have been removed, and a new smooth surface has been poured!  New fencing is starting this week.  We could use your help!

We are looking for:
  • Someone with experience with bouldering walls.  Are you a carpenter or climber?  Have you built one of these before?  We need someone to help install climbing holds between August 17 and 25th.
  • Garden: do you have some extra pieces of flag stone, or nice plants to share?  Are you good at selecting plants and designing small gardens?
  • Donations!  We are close to our budget, but we need more money to purchase a few more things:
volleyball stands/accessories $650,
playground climbing (fort or monkey bars) feature $2,500-4,000
more rubber playground tiles $700
more climbing holds $250
garden supplies:  arborvitaes and few other native plants $100-500
basketball court paints, stains, concrete sealer $100-150
Any amounts are welcome!
  • Help set up / clean up  / ice cream donations for our “THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS PARTY”, Monday, August 31st,  6-7:30pm. If you donated $100 or more to our crowd-funding Wheatridge site or to the fund-a-project at the auction, you are invited to an exclusive reveal party the night before school starts.

Please contact Tricia  tkphotoart@gmail.com  if you can help or mail a check to the office:  4300 N. Winchester, Chicago, IL  60613

Thanks for your consideration and your support for this great improvement for the new school year.
