Pilgrim Announcements
May 24th, 2015

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon people of all nations and backgrounds through one service: 9:30 a.m.!

What an unbelievable place Pilgrim is. What a joy it is for all of us to be part of such a community! In one week, our school received full accreditation from the ELCA Schools and Learning Centers Board with 9 commendations, we enjoyed a chapel service with the Bishop of the ELCA, we launched a new women's Bible Study, we celebrated having raised $32,000 for a new playground, and we celebrated the Baptism of Liam, the son and nephew of Pilgrim Alumni who came back home to Pilgrim. Some churches don't do that much ministry in one year! Congratulations to all!

Pastor Kristian
GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Legacy Bricks Dedication
Join us on Sunday, May 31st at 9:30 am.. for a special dedication of the "Legacy Bricks" in the newly installed Gathering Garden.   The "Legacy Bricks" feature the name of past teachers, Principals, and Pastors that have served throughout Pilgrim's history.  Our featured guest that day will be Dr. Richard Calhoun, currently a professor of mathematics and physics at Concordia University in River Forest.  Dr. Calhoun is the grandson of Pilgrim's first Principal, Alfred Rumsfeld.  Please spread the word among alumni and friends of Pilgrim.

PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
Women’s Bible Study
Come to Marta Hardacre’s house: 4335 N Winchester Ave #1 at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28th to join other women as we consider together the answer to the question: “How do we find joy in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama and daily duties?” We will facilitate this discussion through the five-week Bible study based on bestselling author, Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand Gifts. Refreshments and journals will be provided. Please bring your Bible if you can. Come and relax with us as we enjoy the community God has given us in each other! “It’s only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, that we discover the life we’ve always wanted…” Ann Voskamp
Prayer Ministry
Join us for prayer time at the parsonage every Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (4332 N. Winchester Ave.)
'Camp Discovery' - Vacation Bible School is coming!
Planning and volunteer recruitment are underway for our third VBS adventure, which is scheduled for the week of June 22nd.  Vacation Bible School is for kids ages 3 through Grade 5 from 9 a.m. to noon.  Older kids and adults are encouraged to volunteer to help make this a great experience. Even if you aren't available that week, you can help with set design and building and other preparations.  Online registration is now available on pilgrimchurchandschool.org—click on the VBS banner! If you'd like to volunteer, contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com)

SENT TO SERVE
Geraniums for Pentecost
Help decorate the altar on Sunday, May 24th by bringing red geraniums to church.  The flowers will later be planted in the church garden for all to enjoy.  If anyone would like to volunteer to do the planting,  contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com).  This is a great family activity!

Save the Date and Get Involved!
Save the Date! Pilgrim's annual block party will be on Sunday, September 13th. We are already getting ready for food, fun and fellowship!  We are specifically looking for key leaders in organizing activities, kitchen coordination, marketing and outreach, and logistics.  We are also looking for someone to design a flyer. If you would like to help out, please contact Shellie Riedle Volkens at shellieriedle@yahoo.com.

New Member Classes
What does ‘Lutheran’ mean?  How can Pilgrim help me and my family grow in faith? What does it mean to become a member of Pilgrim?  If you're at all curious about any of these questions, please  explore with us. Membership is done by attending our two-part New Members class.  The next meeting - PART I will be on Thursday evening, May 28th, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Part II is Saturday, May 30th from 11 a.m. to noon. You may RSVP to Lindsay in the Church Office at churchoffice.pilgrim@gmail.com
Hot Meals
Most of the ten teams are well-staffed, but we always need substitutes.  Contact Janet Taylor if you are interested in being a substitute or would like to help in keeping the pantry well-supplied.  Contact Janet Taylor at jkstay@aol.com or (773) 777-4052
Hot Meals Plus has made it easy for you to sign up to be a driver by setting up a SignUpGenius page. The commitment for a driver would be on a Saturday for about an hour and a half - delivering hot meals to shut-ins.  You can sign up for up for any Saturday in the summer on SignUpGenius site, visit this link HERE Or if you prefer, you can still sign up with Janet Taylor - jkstay@aol.com Also we are still looking for more shut-ins who could benefit from a meal delivered to them on Saturdays.  Please pass on names to either Janet Taylor  (jkstay@aol.com 773-777-4052) or Jacquie Mokszycki (jmokszycki@gmail.com)
Pilgrim is Accredited by ELCA with 9 Commendations!
The visit last week was at the end of 18 months of preparation by the teachers, the school office, the Board of Education and the Church Council. Our in-house team leader, Halley Williams, coordinated the preparation of an 878 page document for the national team's review. Every staff member also prepared a portfolio of artifacts, each of which was at least a couple hundred pages in length. After reading through our documents and observing our school on Monday and Tuesday, Pilgrim not only earned full accreditation, but also 9 commendations. WOW! Many thanks to everyone on staff, on PTL, on the BOE and on Council for your help, and special thanks to Halley Williams for coordinating this herculean task.
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES

Play Lot Update
We have raised $32,000 for the play-lot renovation!  This is an amazing response from our Pilgrim community and we THANK YOU!
The reality is that quotes are coming in, and we’re estimating that the project will cost $40,000- $45000, not including the play-deck for little kids. We have 8 more days to STRETCH our goal and raise another $5K. We will apply to a few small potential grants.  Can you help us S T R E T C H by $25, $50, $100 or $250, $500. It has been wonderful and inspiring to see so many families, individuals, alumni and grandparents of students all donating to this project. If you can share the link with someone, please do! We are looking for someone to sponsor a jungle gym for $3,200 . (yes playgrounds are expensive!)  This is a playground feature that we want to add and that will please all ages of children!  It will go in the garden space.  We’ll need resilient surface (rubber tiles or turf- comparing costs)  underneath this and the climbing wall!  That will be expensive too!   (site prep, material, labor).
Other specifics to sponsor: 2 new basketball backboards $300 each outdoor volleyball stands  $549, volleyball net $75, climbing handholds for climbing wall 4 gifts of $200
