Subject: It's Actually a Good Thing

Pilgrim Announcements
February 8th, 2015

Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the blessings this snowstorm has brought us (yes, really!)

It's surprising what we find when we walk through the door of faith and discover the grace God has prepared for us! See you Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.!

"And the whole city was gathered around the door... And he cured many who were sick." Mark 1:33-34

Help Pass Out Valentines <3
Join us from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Friday February 13th at the Montrose L station. You are invited to help us pass out Valentines to commuters to let them know we are thinking of them and that God loves them. A big thank you to all of the Pilgrim students and teachers who have worked tirelessly to make hundreds of Valentines for our community.

Lenten Soup Suppers
We're looking for volunteers to prepare a simple meal for 30-40 people on Wednesdays during Lent.  And no, it doesn't have to be soup!  We have teams for February 18th and 25th, but still need people for March 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.  If you'd like to help, either by organizing a team or serving on one, please contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com) or sign up after the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday.

PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES

Bible Discussion Time: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
First Communion Class– Begins February 18th
We invite everyone who is in 2nd grade or older to participate in our upcoming First Communion Program, which will be February 18th at 5:30 p.m. The interactive class is focused on helping us grow in our relationship with God. We will cover the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the 10 commandments, and the meaning of the sacraments.
Confronting Pharaoh Training
We pray every week: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…” But how can we live that prayer? Many of us are blessed to give money to charity, but what if we could do something more. What if we could let our lives, not just our money, be part of the solution to a safer and more just city?
Join us for a two part training called “Confronting Pharaoh” that is rooted in our Christian faith and located right here in our neighborhood!
  • When: Part 1:  Sunday, February 22 from 1-4pm, Part 2:  Sunday, March 22nd from 1-4 p.m.
  • Where: Ravenswood UCC (2050 W. Pensacola Ave, Chicago)
These trainings will be lead by Community Renewal Society www.communityrenewalsociety.org For more information contact: Ryan Wallace, (312) 673-3852 rwallace@communityrenewalsociety.org

MOPS is a morning group for moms. Discussions and speakers focus on relevant, important, and interesting topics. MOPS usually meets 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. at 4332 N. Winchester Ave. Join us for the next meeting on February 19th. Childcare available on-site!
SENT TO SERVE
Consider an Offering to Hot Meals
The increase in guests to the hot meals has led to increased expenses for food and supplies (not for the volunteers… they work for free) Currently, our Hot Meals fund is in the red. This ministry makes such a big impact and touches so many hundreds of lives every month!  So if you would like to make a special offering to Hot Meals, please go to tinyurl.com/give2pilgrim and in the “other” box, type “Hot Meals” and then indicate the amount you would like to give.

THIS SUNDAY
Prayer for this Week
Everlasting God, you give strength to the weak and power to the faint. Make us agents of your healing and wholeness, that your good news may be made known to the ends of your creation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Readings
Isaiah 40:21–31 (NRSV)
The Judeans in exile have a good reason to be hopeful: the one who will bring them to freedom is the God who created the world, the God who subdues the rulers of the earth and gives strength to those who are weary.

1 Corinthians 9:16-23 (NRSV)
God entrusted Paul with the responsibility of bringing the gospel to diverse people. Hence the focus of Paul's ministry is not his own rights or privileges as an apostle but the privilege of serving God by freely sharing the good news of Christ with others.

Gospel - Mark 1:29-39 (NRSV)
Everywhere Jesus goes, many people expect him to set them free from oppression. Everywhere he goes, he heals them and sets them free. Disease, devils, and death are running for their lives. The forces that diminish human life are rendered powerless by Jesus.
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
ALUMNAE: Come to the 2015 Auction!!!

Please reach out to any Alumnae you may know and direct them to the Pilgrim Facebook page or the Pilgrim Church and School website to

On that note of re-connection; Pilgrim is trying to develop an Alumni association and we are in need of your help.  If you are a graduate, parent or grandparent or friend of a graduate and know their current address, please contact our Ministry Associate, Bilise Bekele at bekele.pilgrim@gmail.com . ‘Those 70s Shows’
Groovy Gala & Auction—Mar 7
Greetings from the 1970s!  Are you ready to dust off your disco duds and get your groove on at Those 70s Shows?

Have you been working on your costumes? So far we have some disco divas, characters from a favorite 70s cartoon, radio DJs and more! Get creative and come as your favorite 70s television character or in a 70s-themed costume!

The donations deadline has come and gone and we are still getting in some really amazing items- it's not too late! Drop off your donation by Tuesday, February 10th at the absolute latest to have it included in the auction. Each family is asked to donate at least one item to help out- if you need ideas, contact
samanthadoerfler@hotmail.com or karen@nevotti.com.

One need we would really like to fill is a donation of airline miles- if you travel a lot and have so many miles you don't know what to do with, we can help!

The tuition raffle is still available but once we run out, you'll miss out on your chance for a YEAR OF TUITION for one child at Pilgrim! You can buy tuition raffle tickets, teacher's day off tickets and your ticket to attend Those 70s Shows by clicking HERE.

If your family or business would like to sponsor the event and show a little extra support– please use the form attached to this email and return it to Alison Hays (alisonmhays@gmail.com) by February 20th at the latest. This level of support really helps us to go a step above previous year's fundraising and make this the best year ever!
