Subject: Hypocrisy and Hope

Pilgrim Announcements
May 17th, 2015

Dear Friends,

While reading an article about the state of Christianity in North America on the internet, I noticed one of the commenters shared:

"…religion is simply a superstition based on incredibly silly stories… as we see the universal hypocrisy of religions and the evil perpetrated in the name of “God”, I can’t help but ask… “Is this is a con game?”

Are these your thoughts sometimes? What would you say if someone you know shared something similar? Do we as Christians offer merely hypocrisy, or real truth and hope? And what does that look like for times like these?

Join us this Sunday as explore our possible responses to these perspectives, and what it means for our lives and our future as families and as a church. This week is the last Sunday of 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services until the fall… see you then!

Pastor Kristian

*SPECIAL REMINDER*
Starting on Sunday, May 24th, we will move to one service at 9:30 a.m. Our 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services resume in September.

SENT TO SERVE
Save the Date and Get Involved!
Save the Date! Pilgrim's annual block party will be on Sunday, September 13th. We are already getting ready for food, fun and fellowship!  We are specifically looking for key leaders in organizing activities, kitchen coordination, marketing and outreach, and logistics.  We are also looking for someone to design a flyer. If you would like to help out, please contact Shellie Riedle Volkens at shellieriedle@yahoo.com.

New Member Classes
What does ‘Lutheran’ mean?  How can Pilgrim help me and my family grow in faith? What does it mean to become a member of Pilgrim?  If you're at all curious about any of these questions, please  explore with us. Membership is done by attending our two-part New Members class.  The next meeting - PART I will be on Thursday evening, May 28th, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Part II is Saturday, May 30th from 11 a.m. to noon. People interested in participating in these classes can participate in any order. Both Part I and Part II are offered each month (so for example, you could attend Part II this month, and Part I next month). You may RSVP to Lindsay in the Church Office at churchoffice.pilgrim@gmail.com
Geraniums for Pentecost
Help decorate the altar on Sunday, May 24th by bringing red geraniums to church.  The flowers will later be planted in the church garden for all to enjoy.  If anyone would like to volunteer to do the planting,  contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com).  This is a great family activity!

41 and counting!
Pilgrim Lutheran School is extremely blessed to have received our 41st consecutive grant from the Sulzer Family Foundation.  The foundation, which aims to support worthy causes in the local area,  was founded by the heirs of Conrad Sulzer who was the first settler of the Ravenswood community.  This school year Pilgrim received $2,500 which is being used to support our special education program.  Pilgrim extends a huge THANK YOU to the Sulzer Family Foundation.
Hot Meals
Most of the ten teams are well-staffed, but the need for substitutes is always true.  Contact Janet Taylor if you are interested in being a substitute or would like to be in charge of keeping the pantry well-supplied.  Contact Janet Taylor at jkstay@aol.com or (773) 777-4052

Hot Meals Plus
For eight weeks now a hot Saturday noon meal has been delivered to some shut-ins. Please contact Janet Taylor or Jackie Mokszycki with names of shut-ins. Also we would like to add more drivers to our list of delivery people. Delivery takes less than two hours. If you would like more information, to submit the name of a shut-in or if you would like to sign up to be a driver, please contact Jackie Mokszycki at jmokszycki@gmail.com.
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
Gift Cards Why not consider purchasing gift cards as gifts for your graduates, teachers or students?  We are carrying a greater variety of $10 denomination cards than usual. Orders may be emailed to Anne Barsano and then would be held for pickup on selling days.
Play Lot Update
We have raised $32,000 for the play-lot renovation!  This is an amazing response from our Pilgrim community and we THANK YOU!
The reality is that quotes are coming in, and we’re estimating that the project will cost $40,000- $45000, not including the play-deck for little kids. We have 8 more days to STRETCH our goal and raise another $5K. We will apply to a few small potential grants.  Can you help us S T R E T C H by $25, $50, $100 or $250, $500. It has been wonderful and inspiring to see so many families, individuals, alumni and grandparents of students all donating to this project. If you can share the link with someone, please do! We are looking for someone to sponsor a jungle gym for $3,200 . (yes playgrounds are expensive!)  This is a playground feature that we want to add and that will please all ages of children!  It will go in the garden space.  We’ll need resilient surface (rubber tiles or turf- comparing costs)  underneath this and the climbing wall!  That will be expensive too!   (site prep, material, labor).
Other specifics to sponsor: 2 new basketball backboards $300 each outdoor volleyball stands  $549, volleyball net $75, climbing handholds for climbing wall 4 gifts of $200
