Subject: Here is Bread

Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,
This Sunday we celebrate our wonderful First Communion students... we celebrate our teachers... and we celebrate the Lord who walks with us and is revealed to us in the breaking of the bread... the road to Emmaus! See you at 8 a.m or 10:30 a.m.!
GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Mothers Day Celebration May 11th
Please join us on this Sunday for a very special Mother's Day celebration. Each woman will receive a white carnation. Also, after the 10:30 a.m. service, we will be taking group and family portraits in Maring Hall of all women and their friends and families.
PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
Mothers of Preschoolers
Join us at MOPS on June 5th, 9:15 a.m. for a very special guest speaker, author Gillian Marchenko. She will be here to talk to our group about her book, her life raising daughters with down syndrome and competition and depression in motherhood. This is an open event that all moms are welcome to attend and copies of Gillian's new book, Sun Shine Down: A Memoir, will be available. This funny, friendly mom is a great speaker and has been recognized for her openness for the sharing of her story in magazines and conferences. RSVP to samanthadoerfler@hotmail.com if you wish to attend. MOPS asks for a donation of $10 for anyone attending the meetings to cover expenses (this would include child care, coffee, snacks and more).
Invitation to MOMSnext
Calling all mothers! We invite you to the MOMSnext dinners we have coming up. These gatherings are always very positive and a lot of fun, and we grow in friendship and support. If you feel like getting out of the house, come join us at the parsonage (4332 N. Winchester) for dinner! All children also get to enjoy dinner and a movie or playing downstairs. If you wish to bring a friend, something to eat, drink or a bottle of wine, all are welcome! MOMSnext is held the 2nd Thursday of every month. Upcoming dates are May 8, June 12. Please join us!
Vacation Bible School
This year’s VBS program, Gangway to Galilee, will take place the week of June 16-20, in the mornings. Kids ages 3 through 12 are eligible to participate. Over the coming weeks we will be asking for adult, teen and 7-8th grade volunteers to help with our preparations, as well as lining up people to help during VBS. Last year’s volunteers had a great time, so please consider signing up to help this year, even if you don’t have kids! Questions? Contact Chris Wallis.

“Hansel & Gretel”
From our School Chorus Director: Dr. D’Agostino:
“I am proud to be a part of Chicago Opera Playhouse which will present Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hansel & Gretel” on Friday, May 2nd at 7:30pm in Maring Hall. I play the role of Hansel and I am really excited to have our kids at Pilgrim join us as the Gingerbread chorus! The performance is a shortened adaptation of the opera, created especially for the young and the young at heart! After 45 minutes of performing, we will allow the audience to ask questions about anything related to what they saw. Please invite your friends and neighbors, it's going to be a lot of fun!” Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino, DMA

SENT TO SERVE
Pilgrim School Awarded the Sulzer Grant for 40th time!
Pilgrim Lutheran School is extremely blessed to have received our 40th consecutive grant from the Sulzer Family Foundation. The foundation, which aims to support worthy causes in the local area, was founded by the heirs of Conrad Sulzer who was the first settler of the Ravenswood community. This school year Pilgrim received $2,500 which is being used to support our special education program. Pilgrim extends a huge THANK YOU to the Sulzer Family Foundation.
Looking for Rides to Church
We are looking for people who would be willing and able, on occasion, to give a ride to someone who needs help getting to church for Sunday worship and home again afterwards. If you have not already done so, please let Barbara Anthony, in the church office, know if your name can be added to a list of volunteer drivers, and also let us know if your vehicle is accessible to people who may have limited mobility. Thank you in advance!
Pilgrim Mission Gifts Grants Opportunity
Part of Pilgrim’s current three-year Capital Campaign is giving 10% to “mission gifts.” Thanks to your generous donations, we would like to decide on some mission gift donations. Please find application forms on the table in the back of the church and on Pilgrim’s website soon. Please turn in completed application forms to the Pilgrim Church Office by May 20 at 5pm for the first round of Mission Gift Grant Approvals. THIS SUNDAY
Our Prayer for Sunday
O God, your Son makes himself known to all his disciples in the breaking of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Acts 2:14a, 36–4;
Today’s reading is the conclusion of Peter's sermon preached following the giving of the Holy Spirit to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. The center of his preaching is the bold declaration that God has made the crucified Jesus both Lord and Christ.

The second reading is 1 Peter 1:17–23;
The imagery of exile is used to help the readers of this letter understand that they are strangers in a strange land. Christians no longer belong to this age. Through the death of Christ we belong to God, so that our focus, faith, and hope are no longer on such things as silver or gold.

The Gospel reading is Luke 24:13–35;
The colorful story of Jesus' appearance to two disciples on the road to Emmaus answers the question of how Jesus is to be recognized among us. Here, he is revealed through the scriptures and in the breaking of bread.
