Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,
This Sunday, as we gather, we will ponder the question, "When experiencing loss, where is God?" Could times of deep loss invite us to seasons of profound growth? Join us at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.!
GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
New date and time for Confirmation Kick Off Dinner
Calling all 7th and 8th graders!

Please join us on Wednesday, October 8th at 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. for a Confirmation Kick-Off and Info Dinner to be held in Maring Hall. We are not going to be gathering on Wednesday, October 1st. Coming to this meeting does not commit you to the program. Contact Pastor Kristian with any questions.
El Salvador Sunday
Join us on Sunday, October 19th as we enjoy testimonies and images from an amazing mission trip experienced by 19 members of the Pilgrim community. It is fitting that we celebrate the huge impact global partnerships have on all of us before going downtown to walk on the Crop Walk! Come show your support to the Baslers, Saiki’s, Johnsons, Ms. Huelskoetter, Ralph, Andrea Preston, and others! 10:30 a.m. service.
Reformation/Confirmation Sunday
Join us on Sunday, October 26th as we celebrate confirmation for our 9th graders who are ready to affirm their baptism. We will be blessed to have their participation throughout the service, and we’ll be glad to lift up the ways they will be serving the church and the world going forward. We invite everyone to wear the liturgical color RED on October 26th, because red represents the Holy Spirit. This day is a celebration of the Holy Spirit that continues to move us toward the grace and mercy of God.
Sunday School is In Full Swing!
Kids age 3 through 5th grade are welcome at our Sunday School, which meets at 9:15 in the sanctuary before splitting up into classrooms. Join us for music, prayer, Bible stories and fun activities. Parents are welcome to stay, or of course we are more than happy to have your children with us while you attend the adult discussion group downstairs. Questions? Contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com).

Blessing of the Animals- October 4th
Do you have animals in your life? Bring your pets to the Gazebo at Welles Park on Saturday, October 4th at 10 a.m. in honor of St. Francis! We'll be joining animals and people from Luther Memorial Church as we hold a brief, interactive prayer service and then bless each animal in attendance. Come out as Luther Memorial and Pilgrim Lutheran bless neighborhood pets at Welles Park in honor of St. Francis. Drinks and treats will be served... see you then!
The Women's Wellness Fair will be hosted at Luther Memorial Church on October 4th. Bianka Hardin, PsyD, will be doing a presentation about talking to your kids about difficult topics, and will also be leading a relaxation for women. For more information, check out their website: http://luthermemorialchicago.org/womens-wellness-day-oct-4th/
Cocktails for a Cause, Friday, October 17
Join Pilgrim parents, friends and alums at Atlantic Bar and Grill on Friday, October 17, 7:00—11:00 p.m. to enjoy an evening out and help meet the challenge to raise $50,000 for the Dave Maring School Endowment Fun. Pilgrim members John and Mary Satter have issued a generous challenge to the Pilgrim community. As the congregation raises the first $25,000, the Satters will match those donations—dollar for dollar—to kick-start the Fund. Meeting this challenge is an awesome way for the Pilgrim community to honor Dave Maring’s contributions to Pilgrim and to continue his good work into the future. The event runs from 7-11 p.m. Tickets will be available in the school and church offices, as well as outside the school Tuesdays after school and Fridays before school. Tickets are $40 through October 10, and October 11-17 will be $45 (and will be available at the door). This event is for adults only, and payment is by cash or check only, please. Looking forward to see you there.
Baby Shower October 5
There will be a baby shower on Sunday, October 5th, following the 10:30 service for Marilyn Donovan’s daughter, Christine, who is expecting a baby girl. Contact Anne Barsano for giftcards.
Prayer Time
Prayer time at the parsonage (4332 N Winchester), from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Quilters’ Craft Day
The Pilgrim Quilters would like to thank everyone who attended our quilt show during the block party and purchased tickets for our raffle quilt. We are donating $150 of the proceeds to the Maring Endowment fund matching gift challenge. On Sunday, November 9, we will be taking over Maring Hall starting at 1:00 p.m. for an afternoon and evening of sewing (or other crafts) and fellowship. We'll supply ironing equipment and power strips for sewing machines, as well as a cutting table. Bring a snack to share, and we'll order dinner around 5 p.m., which usually runs around $9 per person. Want to learn to quilt? We are planning to offer a beginners' class that afternoon. If you are interested, please contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com) to find out what supplies to bring. No prior experience needed, and we'll include hand-piecing for those who don't have sewing machines.
PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
Fall Adult Bible Discussion Group: Unpacking Discipleship
Following Jesus is life’s most challenging and rewarding adventure! Yet, when we hear words like “evangelism” and “discipleship”, we don’t always get so excited. Is it because these words are too dated and “churchy” to be useful in 2014? Or do they need to be renewed and reclaimed so that we can live Jesus' dream for us? Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group, even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!

THIS SUNDAY
Our Prayer for Sunday
Beloved God, from you come all things that are good. Lead us by the inspiration of your Spirit to know those things that are right, and by your merciful guidance, help us to do them, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Isaiah 5:1–7;
The prophet sings a sad, parable-like love song about the relationship between God and Israel. In this song Israel is compared to a promising vineyard. Despite God's loving care, the vineyard that is Israel has brought forth “wild grapes” of injustice and distress, when fine grapes of justice and righteousness were expected.

The second reading is Philippians 3:4b–14
Paul reviews some of his supposed credentials, which no longer have any bearing in comparison to the right relationship he has been given through the death of Christ. The power of Christ's resurrection motivates him to press on toward the ultimate goal, eternal life with Christ.

The Gospel reading is Matthew 21:33–46
Jesus tells a parable to the religious leaders who are plotting his death, revealing that their plans will, ironically, bring about the fulfillment of scripture.
