Subject: Go High

View this email online if it doesn't display correctly

Dear friends,

Our first lady Michelle Obama urged us, especially when we are suffering low blows, to "Go high!"

In this coming Sunday's readings, the author of Colossians tells us similarly, "Set your minds on things that are above..."

Let's do this together, this Sunday at 9:30 AM!
GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Today we welcome Pastor Paula Stecker as our Preacher and Presider. Pastor Paula is an ELCA pastor with a heart for congregational life, multicultural ministry, and social justice. She and her husband, Carl, raised their daughters as they served as missionary nurses in Central Africa. After returning home and studying at LSTC, she was ordained and served in Pennsylvania and in Haiti. Pastor Paula is an Associate with the Kaleidoscope Institute (www.kscopeinstitute.org) is working to help our congregations increase their capacity for intercultural communication.

Partnership with CLEF Nets Pilgrim Security Upgrades—The Chicagoland Lutheran Education Foundation (CLEF) has announced that Pilgrim is receiving a $55K of a grant from a private foundation for security upgrades in CLEF schools. Improvements for Pilgrim include four additional security cameras, new lighting in the playground areas, 12 new basement windows, a new Hot Meals exterior door and 11 new interior doors to secure the Annex and Maring Hall. Work on these projects should happen in August before the start of school and have minimal impact on Pilgrim’s daily operations. Tending to our Souls in Emotional Times—We are in a difficult and anxious moment in our nation's history. Amidst the violence, fear, and mistrust, how do we tend to our souls? And what can we do about the suffering we see in the world? Dr. Bianka Hardin and Pastor Johnson will be creating a time and space in late August for reflection and discussion on these two questions. Please stay tuned for more details. Our Bishop, Rev. Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has issued a statement with her thoughts and some resources that can be found here: http://blogs.elca.org/advocacy/together-grieve-church-nation/
