Pilgrim Update
www.pilgrimchurchandschool.org
Dear Friends,

We invite you to worship this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Our VBS children will be full participants in our celebration, leading songs, reciting Bible Verses, presenting dramatic Bible stories, and leading us in celebrating our theme for the week: "Go Tell It On the Mountain- Jesus Christ is Lord"

Please pray for our dear member Millie Ostrander, who's at Illinois Masonic Hospital with a neck injury.

This Sunday is when we begin our worship series on "Our Vision for the Future." Our first core practice we'll be exploring this weekend is: "Praise God with all generations together."
Family Camp at LOMC
Just a reminder that Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center in Oregon, IL is offering a Family Camp Experience Sunday, June 30th through Friday, July 5th. Families and individuals of all ages are welcome. This is a great way to grow in faith together during the summer. Activities include fishing, hiking, canoeing, Bible studies, worship, crafts, stargazing, archery, and other activities. The camp offers hotel-like accommodations includes three meals a day and a snack in the evening. There is a camp counselor dedicated to Family Camp at all times, giving the parents the options of doing activities with their children or also sending the children with the counselors with activities. Confirmation Retreat
Thank you for all who prayed for our confirmation students during their first annual retreat June 17-19th at Spring Grove Camp. Each participant filled out inventories that helped them discover and explore their base ministry in the five -fold ministry (Ephesians 4) as well as their spiritual gifts (Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12). We also enjoyed worship and many fun activities, such as tubing and Paintball. (Yes, paintball) Please continue to pray that this retreat, and our confirmation program as a whole, is successful in being an ENTRY POINT into active participation in the life of our church and God’s mission going forward. Special thanks to Joe and Angela Cardo, Pastor Kristian, and Brian Twhoig for serving as leaders on this retreat.

A Letter from Common Pantry
Here’s what Pilgrim heard in June in response to our efforts in support of Common Pantry’s mission:

Dear Pilgrim Church,
On behalf of Common Pantry, our volunteers and our clients, I want to personally thank you for coordinating an amazing food drive. The collection brought in approximately 209 lbs. of supplies that will stock our shelves for what is proving to be a very busy 2013. The considerable time and effort you dedicated to this food drive is truly appreciated. These donated items are distributed via two weekly emergency food distribution sessions and a monthly home delivery program for seniors in our community.
Sincerely,
Scott Best, Director

A Mountain Top Experience!
We are so thankful for an amazing Vacation Bible School experience! The good news of Jesus was sung, danced, crafted, proclaimed, shared, eaten, and lived out in so many creative ways this week… it’s astounding! We praise God for all of the volunteers… from Pilgrim and from beyond Pilgrim… that made this ministry possible… THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! And special thanks to Chris Wallis for serving as VBS Director… tremendous work!

Praise Report — Evelyne Manning
Two weeks ago, we asked for prayers for our new member Evelyne Manning, who was in critical condition at Swedish Covenant Hospital. However, by the grace of God, buoyed by many prayers, hymns, and bible readings from the Pilgrim community, she has made a complete turn-around, and she is on the mend at her home, St. Paul’s House on California Ave.! Please continue to pray for her!

Help needed to move dishes!
Pilgrim Church members - your assistance is needed: the cabinet in the kitchen with the good dishes is pulling away from the wall; repairs are planned for next Sunday. After worship on June 30th Anne Barsano and David Emery will be moving the dishes out of the cabinet so it can be repaired. If you can help, that would be great! Please call or email Angela Cardo to let her know you're coming:
angiecardo@sbcglobal.net or 773-244-0160
Looking for Rides to Church
We are looking for people who would be willing and able, on occasion, to give a ride to someone who needs help getting to church for Sunday worship and home again afterwards. Please let Barbara DeGraff, in the church office, know if your name can be added to a list of volunteer drivers, and also let us know if your vehicle is accessible to people who may have limited mobility. Thank you in advance.

Pilgrim’s Vision Going Forward
Throughout the summer and fall, we’re going to be exploring the habits the early church adopted in Acts 2. We’re going to be bringing back some of the content and feedback we received through the “40 Days to Shape our Future” during Lent. We’ll be lifting up our proposed mission statement and core practices and how they could be used to shape our future ministry:

June 30th—VBS celebration: Praise God with all generations together
July 14th—Invite Everyone to be Present (youth emphasis Sunday)
July 21st—Grow in prayer and the word: Bring your Bible to church Sunday, Blessing of the Bibles
July 28th—Respond by advocating Justice for the Vulnerable
August 25th—Invest time, talent, and resources generously
September 8th—Lift up Academic Excellence with a Heart
September 15th—(Block party Sunday) Mpower Homes for Faith Formation
September 22nd—Preach on Mission Statement: In Christ's love, we gather, prepare, and send all as leaders for God's mission in the world. (GPS)
Congregational Forum on the Core Values (after service)
September 29thCongregational Meeting to approve core values

Please join us in worship this summer as we reflect on the question: What are the habits are we as Pilgrim going to form as we see the Holy Spirit move within us?

Our Prayer for Sunday
Sovereign God, ruler of all hearts, you call us to obey you, and you favor us with true freedom. Keep us faithful to the ways of your Son, that, leaving behind all that hinders us, we may steadfastly follow your paths, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21: In the story preceding today’s reading, the prophet Elijah flees for his life to the security of God’s mountain. There the Lord reveals to Elijah that there are still other faithful people in Israel and commissions him to anoint new leaders, including his own successor, Elisha.

The Gospel is Luke 9:51-62: Jesus is unwavering in his commitment to his mission in Jerusalem and will not be swayed by pettiness. In a series of striking cases in point, he calls his disciples to a similar single-mindedness.
