Subject: Blessing in Transition

Pilgrim Announcements
June 14th, 2015

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, we will examine how endings and beginnings in our lives can be tremendous seasons of growth and blessing. (1 Samuel 15:34 - 16:13)

As a Gathering, Preparing, and Sending community, we have many joys to celebrate and challenges to embrace!

Join us this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. as we celebrate some families that are moving to other areas of the country:

The Sperry's (Michigan)
The Otsuka's (Minnesota)
The Pellauer's (Massachusetts)
The Black's (Montana)

We will be acknowledging them (as many as can be with us) with a special cake during coffee hour.

Also, please consider turning out from 1 p.m. and onward on Saturday on the 4300 block of Winchester as we support a Youth Yard Sale, raising money for the El Salvador Trip, and also the 4300 Winchester Ave. Block party!

See you soon!

Pastor Kristian

*Please mark your calendars*
The Congregational Meeting will take place on Sunday June 28th following the 9:30 a.m. service. You may recall from the last Congregational Meeting in January that Pilgrim's fiscal year now begins on July 1st. Thus, at our June 28th meeting, Council will present the budget (covering July 1st, 2015 to June 30th, 2016) for the congregation's review and approval. We will hold a Q&A session on June 21st following that morning's service to address any questions or concerns that anyone has about the budget.
GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES
Honoring all Men!  June 21st
Join us on Sunday, June 21st at 9:30 a.m. for a special Father's Day Celebration!  We will be honoring all men with a special gift, prayer, and Root Beer Float reception afterwards!  Please join us and invite a neighbor or a friend!
PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
Women’s Bible Study
Come to Marta Hardacre’s house: 4335 N. Winchester Ave. #1 at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays from May 28th through June 25th to join other women as we consider together the answer to the question: “How do we find joy in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama and daily duties?” We will facilitate this discussion through the five-week Bible study based on bestselling author, Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand Gifts. Refreshments and journals will be provided. Please bring your Bible if you can. Come and relax with us as we enjoy the community God has given us in each other!

“It’s only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, that we discover the life we’ve always wanted…” Ann Voskamp
Dining Group
On Sunday, June 14th, at 5:30 p.m., we will be dining at La Cocina Boricua, 2420 W. Fullerton, near Western, for Puerto Rican Food.  It has gotten good reviews.  It is BYOB and street parking.  Please let Julie know if you plan to attend and we'll try car pooling.  Thanks!

Summer Enrichment Program
Are you still looking for activities for your little ones this summer? There are still spots left in our Pilgrim Summer Enrichment Program for children ages 4 years old to 3rd grade. SENT TO SERVE
Pilgrim is Accredited by ELCA with 9 Commendations!
The visit last week was at the end of 18 months of preparation by the teachers, the school office, the Board of Education and the Church Council. Our in-house team leader, Halley Williams, coordinated the preparation of an 878 page document for the national team's review. Every staff member also prepared a portfolio of artifacts, each of which was at least a couple hundred pages in length. After reading through our documents and observing our school on Monday and Tuesday, Pilgrim not only earned full accreditation, but also 9 commendations. WOW! Many thanks to everyone on staff, on PTL, on the BOE and on Council for your help, and special thanks to Halley Williams for coordinating this herculean task.
VBS Registration Deadline is Near!
Registration for this summer's VBS program, Camp Discovery, closes June 15th.  Kids ages 3 through 5th grade are invited to sign up for a week of stories, music, crafts and games. For planning purposes, especially making sure we have enough volunteers, the sooner you sign up your kids, the better!  Register now at on our website pilgrimchurchandschool.org by clicking on the banner. Questions? contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com)
Coffee Hour dates available August 16th (9:30) and November 22nd are still free dates for Coffee Hour for this year.  Please contact Anne Barsano (cbarsano@aol.com) know if you would like to sponsor one of them.
Save the Date and Get Involved!
Save the Date! Pilgrim's annual block party will be on Sunday, September 13th. We are already getting ready for food, fun and fellowship!  We are specifically looking for key leaders in organizing activities, kitchen coordination, marketing and outreach, and logistics.  We are also looking for someone to design a flyer. If you would like to help out, please contact Shellie Riedle Volkens at shellieriedle@yahoo.com.

IT’S THE FIRST!
Pilgrim Lutheran School is thrilled to receive our very first grant from the Dave Maring Endowment Fund. The Maring Fund was set up by the Pilgrim Church and School community in 2014 to support the school in a variety of ways. For the 2014-2015 school year,  the Maring Fund awarded over $2,600, which has been applied to our tuition assistance program. Pilgrim School extends a HUGE “Thank You” to the Dave Maring Endowment Fund and to all its donors for their support of Pilgrim.

Hot Meals
Most of the ten teams are well-staffed, but we always need substitutes.  Contact Janet Taylor if you are interested in being a substitute or would like to help in keeping the pantry well-supplied.  Contact Janet Taylor at jkstay@aol.com or (773) 777-4052
Hot Meals Plus has made it easy for you to sign up to be a driver by setting up a SignUpGenius page. The commitment for a driver would be on a Saturday for about an hour and a half - delivering hot meals to shut-ins.  You can sign up for up for any Saturday in the summer on SignUpGenius site, visit this link HERE Or if you prefer, you can still sign up with Janet Taylor - jkstay@aol.com Also we are still looking for more shut-ins who could benefit from a meal delivered to them on Saturdays.  Please pass on names to either Janet Taylor  (jkstay@aol.com 773-777-4052) or Jacquie Mokszycki (jmokszycki@gmail.com)
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
Support our Youth Going to El Salvador!
We are overjoyed to share that 7 youth are going to El Salvador on our mission trip this summer, including some of the members of the Lane Tech Homeland Helpers Club who has been serving so consistently at our Hot Meals program.

They are organizing two fundraisers to benefit their trip and the ministry of the Lutheran Church of El Salvador:
  1. This Saturday, June 13th- Yard Sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Pilgrim Parsonage (4332 N. Winchester Ave.) This will be taking place during the beginning of the 4300 N Winchester Block Party… come check out the merchandise!
  2. Sunday, June 21st- Walkathon to Reach El Salvador (Part II) 8:30 a.m., Pilgrim Lutheran Church Please consider making an offering in support of those going to El Salvador!
Gift Cards will be sold on Sunday after church and on Monday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. throughout the summer. Please contact Anne Barsano (cbarsano@aol.com) with questions.
Play Lot Update
School is done, but planning for the play lot renovation is fully under way!  We could still use YOUR HELP!  We've raised about $34,000 for this and to do the first phase right, we need $44,000.  The challenge comes down to purchasing the resilient surface for the smaller half of the play lot by the climbing wall instead of putting in woodchips. We do not want to add a curb in the middle to keep the woodchips in.  PLEASE show your Pilgrim support for this big improvement!  Donations are welcome in the office designated for ’play lot’ as our online portion has closed.  We will also be looking for volunteers in August !  If 50 families each donated $200, we would be at our goal.  Give the gift that will keep giving for the future generations of Pilgrim students.
