Pilgrim Update

Dear Friends,

Please join us in honoring Beth Ruppe as she begins her last week as our Principal. We will say a prayer of Godspeed with Greg, Angie, Meg, Gabe, and Libby Pilgrim as they prepare to move to Hudson, Wisconsin. We will also celebrate the Baptism of Henry Killelea! This Sunday represents a sacred time. A sad time. A hopeful time. Thank you for presence and prayers this weekend!
Honoring All Men—Father’s Day
Next week we will be honoring all men with a special prayer and a gift. Please join us afterwards for Dad’s Root Beer Floats! Please invite the men in your life to be present!

New Members Sunday
Next Sunday, we will welcome Andy, Bianka, and Bailey Hardin-Frye, the Telford Family, and Kathy Danner into membership! Please join us in celebrating their arrival!

Potbelly Fundraiser
on Thursday, June 20th
Take a night off of cooking and join some friends while raising money for Pilgrim! Potbelly Sandwich Shop in Lincoln Square (4709 N. Lincoln Ave.) will donate 25% of ALL sales from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20th to Pilgrim.  Yes, you read that correctly: the donation applies to all sales, so there is no need to mention Pilgrim when ordering.  If you can't make it out, the deal also applies to all deliveries made during that same time period.  As a bonus, the Thursday night farmer's market and summer concert series will be in full swing so come out for a night of fun

Dining Group at Moody’s Pub
The Dining Group will be going to Moody’s Pub, 5910 N. Broadway, on Sunday, June 23rd, for al fresco dining at 5:30pm. Please let Julie Lea know if you plan to join the party; 773-764-3140. Thanks!

El Salvador Walk Thank-you
Thank you for everyone who participated in the El Salvador Walk and Impromptu Auction to bring electricity to a rural village outside of San Salvador. Over $3600 was pledged or raised! Praise God!

Pilgrim’s Vision Going Forward
Throughout the summer and fall, we’re going to be exploring the habits the early church adopted in Acts 2. We’re going to be bringing back some of the content and feedback we received through the “40 Days to Shape our Future” during Lent. We’ll be lifting up our proposed mission statement and core practices and how they could be used to shape our future ministry:

June 30th—VBS celebration: Praise God with all generations together
July 14th—Invite Everyone to be Present (youth emphasis Sunday)
July 21st—Grow in prayer and the word: Bring your Bible to church Sunday, Blessing of the Bibles
July 28th—Respond by advocating Justice for the Vulnerable
August 25th—Invest time, talent, and resources generously
September 8th—Lift up Academic Excellence with a Heart
September 15th—(Block party Sunday) Mpower Homes for Faith Formation
September 22nd—Preach on Mission Statement: In Christ's love, we gather, prepare, and send all as leaders for God's mission in the world. (GPS)
Congregational Forum on the Core Values (after service)
September 29thCongregational Meeting to approve core values

Please join us in worship this summer as we reflect on the question: What are the habits are we as Pilgrim going to form as we see the Holy Spirit move within us?

Coffee Hour on June 30th
We are in need of a family to host the coffee hour on June 30th, after the service at 9:30 a.m. Please let Anne Barsano know if you are interested.
VBS registrations are due by June 15th!
You’ll find a link to the online registration form on Pilgrim’s home page, . VBS is open to all Pilgrim and neighborhood kids ages 3 to 12; it will begin with a barbecue dinner at 5:30 pm and activities from 6- 7:45 p.m. on Monday, June 24th, and continue on Tuesday through Friday morning, from 9:00 until noon, concluding at the 9:30 a.m. worship service on June 30th. The link on the home page also works if you want to volunteer! There are also registration forms for students and volunteers on the table at the back of the church. The cost for the week, which covers snacks, crafts and other materials, is $35 for one child, with a $50 maximum per family. Paper registration forms as well as checks made payable to Pilgrim Lutheran Church can be dropped off in the church office, or left in Amy Kaniff's mailbox at church.
Calling all Set Designers!
The VBS team needs your help to create our various mountain-climbing sets.  You don't need to be a Wyeth  or Monet to help us paint canvas tarps in "rocky" colors, or turn cardboard into grass or trees.   Please join us on Saturday, June 15th, at 9 a.m. in Maring Hall to cut, paint, trace, and squish various simple raw materials into scenery. Yes, there will be coffee. Weather permitting, the actual painting will take place outside in the play/parking area. Speaking of raw materials, if anyone has large (appliance size) boxes, old canvas tarps, leftover gray, brown, or black latex paint, or A-frame ladders we could borrow to use as mountains, please contact Chris Wallis

VBS Volunteers Training
There will be a training session on Monday, June 17th, at 6:30 p.m. for our VBS volunteers. We'll have a Bible study to go over the five lessons included in the kids' experience, and review the program so all the leaders and helpers will be familiar with the flow of events. If you have signed up as a volunteer, we'll be e-mailing further information.

Market Day Thank-You
Thank you to those families who supported Market Day this year.  Our next order date will be September 9th- maybe you will try Market Day then.  Pilgrim earns 10- 20% of your order!
Great Banquet Men’s
and Women’s Retreats
The Great Banquet retreat is a fantastic experience that helps participants to hear from God and to grow in their relationship with Christ. The retreats are held twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. The next men's weekend is September 26–29, 2013, and the next women’s weekend is October 3–6, 2013. In the spring of 2014, the men’s weekend will be April 24th–27th and the women’s weekend will be held on May 1st–4th. If you are at all interested in participating, please give your name to Renee, Kathy, Pastor Anna-Kari or Pastor Kristian.

Our Prayer for Sunday
Compassionate God, you have assured the human family of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Deliver us from the death of sin, and raise us to new life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
I Kings 17:17-24: Having offered hospitality to Elijah, a widow in Zarephath loses her son to an illness. Through prayer, Elijah restores the boy to life, and the joyful mother acknowledges that Elijah is indeed a man of God.

The Gospel is Luke 7:11-17: Jesus’ ministry bears witness to God’s coming reign, where the lowly are shown mercy and the dead are raised. Here, Jesus ministers to a widow by raising her only son to life.
