"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place." Acts 2:1

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday! Amid the more famous aspects of the story... the mighty wind, the tongues, and the flames, we sometimes forget how the story begins... with everyone together in one place.

So we invite everyone to come and to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit together! Our preacher this Sunday is Pastor Anna-Kari Johnson (Pastor Kristian's wife) who will give an inspiring Pentecost message!

This Sunday is the last Sunday we'll have an 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. service... Starting next week, the 26th, we'll start our summer schedule with a 9:30 a.m. service each week through Labor Day weekend.

Hope to see you Sunday!

Sunday School End-of-Year Party
We'll be finishing our Sunday School term on Sunday, May 19th, at 9:15 a.m. with our party.  We'll meet in Maring Hall for music, crafts and games (and the ever-popular snacks).
Thank-you to Mrs. Ruppe
Mrs. Beth Ruppe, our school principal, has accepted a position as the Director of The Total Child Preschool and Childcare Center in Evanston. We are sad to with the news that Mrs. Ruppe will no longer be our Principal. We are so grateful for her dedicated and inspired leadership over the past two years. Please mark the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, June 9th, on your calendars as an “Appreciation Sunday” for Mrs. Ruppe and her 13 years of service at Pilgrim.

Quilters’ & Crafters’ Mini-Retreat
Join us this Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until evening for an afternoon of fellowship and fun.  The Quilters will be tying up any loose ends on the Project Linus blankets, and working on their own projects.  You don't have to sew. Bring your knitting, scrapbooking, or whatever (or just come hang out). Bring a snack to share, and we'll order dinner early in the evening (usually around $8).  If you'd like to learn to quilt, talk to us ahead of time so we can advise you on materials.  Questions?  Contact Chris Wallis (cewallis1949@yahoo.com or 773-561-5419).

MOPS Toy Drive
Mothers of Preschoolers needs toys! If you are cleaning out your closets and find toys your children have outgrown, please consider donating them to MOPS! We are looking for baby toys, riding and push toys, games, puzzles and books. We will have a collection bin at the back of church! Or you can drop your donation off at 4332 N. Winchester, or, better yet, bring it to a MOPS meeting!

 Greek Dining in May
The dining group will enjoy Greek food at Barba Yianni, 4761 N. Lincoln Ave., at 5:30 p.m. this Sunday, May 19th. Barba Yianni is an authentic Greek restaurant, offering an extensive menu that appeals to all palates. This includes a bevy of vegetarian dishes, including vegetarian mousaka and spanakotiropita, and kabobs of beef, seafood, shrimp, pork loin, lamb and chicken. They use only the freshest ingredients in preparing classic Greek dishes in their distinctive style. You can check out their menu here! If you’d like to join in, call Julie Lea, 773-764-3140.

Welcome to School Families!
Church members have been seeing these messages for a few weeks; they replace the weekly church announcements that were sent out as attachments to an email message and uploaded to Sycamore (Pilgrim School's information system) to let school folks know what's happening at Pilgrim Church. Beginning this week, school parents who aren't members of Pilgrim Church have been added to the list. We hope that everyone appreciates hearing from Pilgrim Church; for those who don't, there's the usual "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of each message.
Great Banquet Men’s
and Women’s Retreats
This Sunday  at the 10:30 a.m. service we are blessed with temple talks given by Renee Stuedemann and Kathy Danner. They are sharing about their experience on a Greater Chicago Great Banquet weekend. The next men's weekend is September 26–29, 2013, and the next women’s weekend is October 3–6, 2013. In the spring of 2014, the men’s weekend will be April 24th–27th and the women’s weekend will be held on May 1st–4th. If you are at all interested in participating, please give your name to Renee, Kathy, Pastor Anna-Kari or Pastor Kristian.

Project Linus Thank-You
On behalf of the Thrivent North Cook County Chapter and the Pilgrim Quilters, thank you to everyone who came to the Join Hands Day to make blankets for kids.  This includes not only all of you who gave up part of your Saturday, but also the Pilgrim students and teachers who helped on Friday, everyone who stayed after the late service last Sunday to color more fabric squares for the quilts, and anyone who's still sewing.   The finished blankets will be blessed during the May 22nd school chapel service before being sent on to the Project Linus warehouse and the kids who need them.

Our Prayer for Sunday
God our creator, the resurrection of your Son offers life to all the peoples of the earth. By your Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love, empowering our lives for service and our tongues for praise, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Acts 2:1-21: Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told his disciples they would be filled with the Holy Spirit. Now, surrounded by signs of fire, wind, and a variety of languages in their midst, the people were amazed and astonished at Jesus’ promise coming true.

The Psalm is Psalm 104:24-34, 35b: Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. (Ps.104:30)

The second reading is
Romans 8:14-17: Here Paul speaks about the mystery of baptism: through the Holy Spirit we are claimed, gathered, and welcomed into Christ’s body, the church. And we receive new names in our adoption: brother, sister, child of God.

The Gospel is
John 14:8-17, 25-27: Though the disciples struggle with Jesus’ nature and identity, they receive the promise that they too will be identified with God and God’s mission. Though he must leave them behind, Jesus promises the coming of the Advocate whom God will send to comfort and strengthen them.
