Subject: A Word for Those aren't so "churchy"

Dear Friends,

This Sunday at 9:30 a.m. we welcome the Executive Director of the Common Pantry (and the Aunt of a Pilgrim Alum) Margaret O'Conor to share with us!

We will also receive a Word that is meant for all of us... whether we have grown up in church or are exploring Christianity for the first time. Whether we are feeling close to God or far away from God.
Whether we're feeling enthusiastic or burned out.
Whether we are liberal or conservative, rich or poor,
there is a Word in which we are "built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God." Ephesians 2:22

Built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God... Is this too good to be true? Depending on our own strength and moods, yes. But when we depend on God, it is not only possible, it is what happens over and over again, with each step we take toward the cross, toward vulnerability, toward hope.

We are also VERY excited to share a new resource for growing in faith at home... or on the road. Pilgrim has purchased subscription to a wonderful resource called "Taking Faith Home" developed by www.milestonesministry.org These inserts give examples of four key faith practices (caring conversations, devotions, service, and rituals) and include a weekly prayer, bible verse, mealtime prayer, and blessing.

They will be on the back table each and every Sunday. For those who can't make it to church, we will be including a link to the insert each week in this weekly enewsletter.

This week's "Taking Faith Home" insert for the week of Sunday, July 22nd can be accessed here:

PREPARE (GROWTH) OPPORTUNITIES
Taking  Faith Home is a devotional tool for families to use on a daily basis. It includes scripture readings, prayers and blessings to share. This week the theme is Jesus sends out his disciples, supporting this week’s Gospel reading. Bring Jesus into your home this summer with this easy to use guide for home worship. Weekly handouts will be on the table in the back of the church.

Why Stewardship? is a thoughtful 90 minute, interactive learning event (in person or online). We’ll begin with stewardship shaped by the “why”: God’s dream that our lives and our world would be healthy and flourish! Then the “what” and the “how.” It will be led by Steve Oelschlager on Wednesday, August 15th, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Pilgrim. He is the stewardship program coordinator for the ELCA and is energized by ideas about life, faith, religion, and money. He hopes to be a teacher and leader of life-giving change through his work. Come join us for what is sure to be an educational evening.

Prayer Time - We invite you to join us Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at the Parsonage for a time of prayer... it is so renewing!

Women’s Bible Study - Please join us on Wednesday, July 25th, for our last session of the summer. We gather at Renee Stuedemann’s home for light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and begin at 7:00 p.m. To RSVP contact churchadmin@pilgrimchicago.org

"Fun Summer Bible Stories" is an interactive, mini Sunday School experience for children aged 3-11 that will take place each Sunday during coffee hour after 9:30 a.m. worship during the summer. It was the confirmation students idea to do this! It especially makes sense to do this during the summer when Sunday School takes a break. SENT TO SERVE
2018 Block Party - September 16, 2018 is coming fast! Each fall, Pilgrim throws a unifying party for our church, school, school alumni, hot meals guests, and neighbors. Contact Sarah Lau if you are interested in helping at sarahlau@juno.com.

The Block Party is looking for small game prizes for children and also items that can be used in the Penny Social, bot both children and adults. If you can help, please contact Anne Barsano 773-472-6037 or cbarsano@aol.com. Thank you!

Summer Challenge—Jesus with me! In the back of the church, you will find a cardstock half sheet image of Jesus. To celebrate the various ways Jesus accompanies us this summer, we invite you to: 1. Take Jesus with you this summer! Color it, make it your own! 2. Take a picture with Jesus wherever you are, with whoever you’re with, doing whatever activity, trip, or service. 3. Upload them to Facebook or Twitter at #pilgrimJesus2018 or send them to: churchadmin@pilgrimchicago.org 4. Prizes will be given in the fall to the 10 best pictures! And then we’ll enjoy a slideshow in church!

Cards for “Families Belong Together” - Senator Dick Durbin is leading the cause for refugee children who are separated from their parents to receive loving, supportive greeting cards. We are all encouraged, especially kids, to make cards and send them to: UAC/ORR Program, ATTN: Cards for Kids, 330 C Street, SW, 5th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20201.

Pilgrim’s Card Ministry - If you have cards you would like to donate to Pilgrim’s Card Ministry, please give them to Michael Haisler. They will be sent to those with birthdays and anniversaries, those in need, in our prayers, or those who just need cheering up. They can be left in his mailbox in the Narthex. Thank you!
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
Tuition Assistance Appeal - The time has come to lift up among Pilgrim families, members, friends and alumni our Tuition Assistance Campaign for the 2018-19 school year. In our mission to provide academic excellence with a heart, Pilgrim is blessed with many gifts from many people. We invite you to help us extend the gift of a Pilgrim education to more students! Please visit our Vanco giving page http://tinyurl.com/give2pilgrim or write a check to Pilgrim and write ”Tuition Assistance” on the Memo Line. Thank you!

2018 Mortgage Campaign - We are using the account formally known as the Growing Forward Capital Campaign to continue to pay our monthly mortgage bill of $2,048. The 2018 Mortgage Campaign Giving is falling short of what is needed to pay the monthly bill. Thank you to everyone who is giving one time or monthly automatic contributions to the current 2018 Mortgage Campaign. We invite those who have not had a chance to give to this campaign to make a donation via check, with the memo saying "2018 Mortgage Campaign," or go to the giving page at www.tinyurl.com/give2pilgrim and set up a monthly automatic payment. Thank you!

Windows Into Our Future - There are 30 classroom windows which face west along the alley. They are old, they are not energy/cost efficient, and they provide no sound proofing. We have set a goal to raise $85,000 in the next 11 months, and our appeal is to both school families and church members. We have raised $23,000 so far. We encourage both one-time donations and on-going monthly donations to this campaign over the coming 12 months. To give, visit https://tinyurl.com/pilgrimwindows and if you have any questions, please contact the school office at office@pilgrimchicago.org

Gift Cards - Pilgrim will be selling gift cards on Sundays after the 9:30 a.m. service and in the school office on Mondays from 9:00—10:00 a.m. (with the exception of July 30th). You may also fill in an order form from the table in the narthex or school office or from the link below. Please leave it in the school office or with the Sunday Seller. Contact Anne Barsano at cbarsano@aol.com or 312-972-9040 with questions and for alternate pick up times. Thank you!
