Dear Nurses,

Nursing Shortage? In a recent article from Health Leaders Media, there’s a report on how millennials are embracing the nursing profession and how this will hopefully stem the tide of many baby boomers departing. I question the severity of the shortages being predicted because it is so much more than a numbers game. Simultaneously occurring to the exodus of baby boomers is the continued technologic development of software solutions and robotics. Robotics were initially used as logistical support with supplies delivery, since nurses were walking on average five miles per shift. Robotics have been employed in certain surgeries for years. It is now growing in popularity in the clinical setting, especially Pediatric units. While I am not a fan of ‘robots’ in inpatient care settings, it is happening (read more in the mHealth Intelligence article below). I am a fan of more individuals being drawn to the nursing profession. More attention needs given to educating nurses on innovative and entrepreneurial solutions to healthcare delivery. The NNBA is dedicated to providing nurses resources to do this. This year’s conference will have Christine Meehan, RN, BSN, MEd conducting a session on Nurse Entrepreneurs as Innovators in Healthcare Delivery. Christine was the CEO of a medical device company and now teaches innovation and entrepreneurship to nursing students at the University of Connecticut. Nurse Business Insider Tip                              by Michelle Podlesni
Where Nurses in Business will share an insider tip that may benefit other nurses in different stages of business development.
Improve Decision Making: It is said that good leaders are good decision makers. I devoted an entire chapter to Confident Decision Making in my book, Unconventional Nurse Going from Burnout to Bliss! I continually study how to improve decision making and came across The 4 R’s that can be employed when you are facing a tough decision during a stressful time.
  • Regret – what will you regret if you fail to act?
  • Repeal – How difficult will it be to reverse course?
  • Repercussions – Who and what else is affected by your decision?
  • Resilience – What will be the impact of the decision on your personal resilience and that of other affected parties such as customers or suppliers?
Sometimes you have to make a decision, doing the best you can with what information you have. The 4 R’s can help you reduce stress and increase the odds of successful decisions during tough times.
Expand your network, build meaningful relationships and find innovative ideas for your entrepreneurial venture. Attend our annual educational conference on Nurse Entrepreneurship & Career Alternatives and discover the unlimited choices in nursing!

Science of Being the Most Interesting Person in Conversations

Robots and robotics have been a fixture in healthcare for decades. New telehealth and mHealth tools are giving them a chance to shine.

Long a staple of science fiction, robots are now proving their value as a telemedicine resource.

Originally designed to ferry supplies around the hospital or give surgeons a steadier hand for delicate medical procedures, robots are now finding their way into the care continuum, thanks to a variety of designs that can turn them into walking, talking healthcare kiosks. Healthcare robots can take orders from and deliver items to a patient, act as an around-the-clock sitter, assist frail and elderly patients out of a bed or chair, or provide a video connection to a distant doctor.
Many solo entrepreneurs make good six-figure income living selling products and services online. If you’re a technical person, it’s even better, as you can create a highly-scalable cloud-based business. For non-technical founders, there are still many ways to make a six-figure or, even, seven-figure annual revenue.

Several years ago, I started an online publishing startup selling e-books written by myself and several co-authors. In one year, it started generating a six-figure income annually.

To me, that experience has been a determining factor for staying true as an entrepreneur. Today, I own several online ventures that sell both digital and physical products. Each of them uses a different business model.
Caroline Webb, the renowned economist, leadership coach, and author of How to Have a Good Day, has helped hundreds of organizations be more effective through behavioral economics, psychology, and neuroscience.

In a recent interview with award-winning podcaster David Burkus, she gave us some keen scientific insights behind what makes people better at connecting with others in new social situations. More on that below.

First, it's important to know what's going on in our brains. Webb says we have a "two-system brain" -- the "deliberate system" and the "automatic system." The latter is largely subconscious and what we normally use in conversation. It's the deliberate system that's a game changer if we know how to tap into it.
