AIAA Short Course: Optimal Design in Multidisciplinary Systems
Registration is now open for this short course, which will be offered on the weekend before the AIAA AVIATION conference in Atlanta, June 23-24. I have been teaching this course every year since 2014 with Dr. Jaroslaw Sobieski. The course assumes no previous knowledge of optimization and is suitable for participants from industry, academia, and research laboratories alike.

TACS: Parallel structural finite-element solver

TACS wingbox model
TACS is a general purpose parallel finite-element code for analysis and gradient-based design of advanced structures. TACS has been used in almost all the work we have done that involves structures, and has been under continuous development since 2010 by the Structural and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Group at Georgia Tech and by the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Lab at the University of Michigan. TACS is compatible with NASTRAN .bdf files and includes a Python wrapper and API.

Aerodynamic shape optimization using OpenFOAM
We developed a discrete adjoint for OpenFOAM that enables practical aerodynamic shape optimization for the first time. In this paper, we explain the implementation and present applications to low-speed wing design and car geometries. One of the car applications is validated against wind tunnel tests.
