June 09 Newsletter

Hi All,

Welcome to the June newsletter! It’s been longer than it should have been since the last newsletter, but that’s because I’ve been busy finishing off the latest issue of Jissen: The Free Online Practical Martial Arts Magazine! If you check out section 1, you can find all the details and the link to download your copy. It’s our biggest issue yet and, as always, it is given to you at the great price of free!

I’m busy putting the finishing touches to a new podcast that will be out soon. In the meantime we have a free five minute long instructional video clip on the applications of Naihanchi / Tekki that can be viewed via the blog! I hope you all enjoy it.

This newsletter also sees us launch some of our DVDs as digital downloads! People have been asking about this for a while and I’m really pleased that we have finally got things in place. Seeing as downloads don’t need posting or the manufacture of physical DVDs they are 40% cheaper! If the download format proves popular, we will look to make more of our titles available this way. You can find details on the titles available and how the system works in section 4.

Whilst on the subject of DVDs, the much awaited titles on the two man drills for the Pinan / Heian series should not be too much longer! I’ve now seen the rough cuts of the DVDs and I am very happy with them. You can find more details in section 10.

In section 6 you can find details of the open seminars I will be conducting in the latter part of the year. I hope to see you at a seminar coming soon near you! As you can see my dairy is now very full and there are only a few dates left available for anyone wanting me to visit them this year.

The final thing to mention in the introduction is that for all of this week, all newsletter subscribers can have 25% off anything purchased from the shop (that is in addition to the current 3 for 2 offers on books and DVDs). Please see section 5 for details.

As usual, this newsletter also includes all the latest news and many great training opportunities.

Be sure to enjoy Jissen and I’ll be back in touch shortly!

All the best,

Iain

1 – Jissen 5 now available for download!

Jissen 5 CoverThe fifth issue of Jissen is now ready for download! We have over 80 pages of quality pragmatic information for you in Jissen 5 and I hope you find it all enjoyable, educational and thought provoking. Each issue is getting a massive amount of downloads and the feedback has been universally positive. Good to know you obviously feel we’re hitting the mark!

I’ve received quite a few emails from readers stating how much they like the “themed” nature of previous issues. I have to confess that any common threads running though previous issues were entirely accidental! If an article is well written, information focussed, and pragmatically biased then we’ll do our best to find space for it. However, whilst totally unintentional, I will claim any credit on offer for the fact that a number of Jissen 5’s articles discuss the relationship between traditional and modern self-protection systems! I hope you enjoy our contributors’ thoughts on these issues as much as I did.

Issue 5 also sees us include the first two of a series of interviews conducted by Michael Rosenbaum! All of the people interviewed are skilled and experienced practical martial artists. Michael’s thoughtful questions allow the reader to learn from the experiences of the interviewees and for them to share their hard-won knowledge. This month we kick things off with two superb pieces with Ed Francisco (USA) & Gary Chamberlain (UK). In the next issue we’ve got another great interview with leading realist Dave Turton, with yet more interviews to follow! I’m very grateful to Michael and all those who have been interviewed. These information heavy pieces are what interviews should be and you can be assured that no vacuous personality pieces will grace the pages of this publication.

2 - Online video lesson (Master's Seminar)

Naihanchi / Tekki Clinch FightingIt’s been a little while since we put any video clips up on the blog; so I thought it was about time we put that right!

As many of you will know, I recently purchased the rights to all my martial arts DVDs. One of the positives of this big dent in the finances is that we can now make use of that footage in some pretty exciting ways!

One thing I will now be doing is putting short clips from the DVDs on this blog so you good people can have free online mini lessons! This first short clip is a few bits of footage from my Masters Seminar DVD.

This DVD was filmed at “The Masters Seminar” a few years ago, where a number of the UK’s leading martial artists – from a variety of differing arts and styles – got together to teach. I did a session on how Naihanchi / Tekki kata teaches the skills associated with covering and clinching. Whilst the DVD records the full session, this clip looks at the use of the opening “salutation” and some of the counter clinching later on in the form.

Please follow this link to view the footage: http://blog.iainabernethy.com/?p=231

If you click on the “play now” link on the above webpage (or the “play in pop up” link) it will allow you to view the clip. The blog’s built in player has limits on the file size it can work with so we had to keep the file size down for this clip. Therefore the clip may get a little grainy if you blow it up too much. However, if you watch it at standard size it will be clear enough.

Warning: The methods shown on this clip are potentially dangerous and must not be attempted by anyone unless they are in good health and under the direct supervision of a suitably qualified and experienced martial arts instructor.

I hope you enjoy this short online video lesson; and if you’d like to see more, please check out the DVD or the associated download (See section 4). I’ll be back with more soon!

3 - Instructors Course Update

On the 25th & 26th of April we held an introductory instructors' course. These courses are for people who have had plenty of exposure to my methods and who wish to teach their own interpretation of it to others. The weekend course was very intense with people being required to complete a number of exercises and pass a written exam at the end (anything less than 100% being a fail). Those in attendance had prepared well, worked hard over the course of the weekend, and did a great job in assimilating all the fine points of the material covered. All of the following people successfully gained the level of  Introductory Instructor:

Instructors Course 2009

Jamie Gray, Adrian Pickard, Stuart Kennedy, Lee Taylor, Andrew O’Brien, Christopher Marshall, Michael Smith, Neil Cook, Stewart Squire, Dave Webster, Mike Judd, Jounier Taylor, Christopher Bladon, Emrys Owen, Cornelius O’Mahony & Craig Penman.

These courses are not run on a regular basis and are only held when there are sufficient numbers of people with enough experience. My efforts for the next 12 months or so are going to be focussed on getting those who have completed the introductory level up to full instructors status. It will therefore be sometime before another introductory level course is held. If you feel this is something you would like to pursue, please see me at the seminars so we can chat about how you need to prepare and what is needed to successfully progress on this side of things.

4 - New Iain Abernethy DVD Downloads

For a while now we have had requests to make our DVDs available as digital downloads. There are obvious advantages to that format: The programmes can be sold cheaper as the customer does not need to pay for the actual manufacture of the DVD and there are obviously no shipping charges. You also don’t need to wait for the DVD to be delivered as the programme can be downloaded immediately.

The downsides are that there are costs involved in converting the DVDs to digital download format and, sadly, there is also the potential problem of piracy. It does upset me when I find that people like my material and yet they are prepared to steal from me and my family, and in some cases to also help others to steal from us by making our material available via illegal websites. Every so often we find crooks at work, or have them reported to us, and then have to waste time dealing with them.

That said, the vast majority of people are not thieves and, when looking at downloads, it has therefore been a matter of giving our honest supporters what they want whilst having a system that makes things as difficult as possible for those who would steal from my family. And I think we have worked out a really good system to do that! We therefore have some of our DVDs now available to purchase as downloads!

As I say, there are costs involved in converting all the DVDs to downloads, so I want to see if it is financially viable before investing too much time and money. We have therefore converted three DVDs so far and money generated from the sales of those downloads will be used finance the conversion of others.

If these downloads prove popular, we will continue to make other titles available this way. The downloads are £10 cheaper than the DVDs and there is obviously no postal costs too (we can’t make them any cheaper as – although downloads save the cost of producing the physical DVD – we still need to recoup the costs of filming and editing the actual programme).

Download Details:
The downloads are Quicktime files. QuickTime is a very popular video format and the majority of computers (both Macs and PCs) have the required player installed. In the unlikely event that your computer does not already have the required software, QuickTime player can be downloaded for free from www.apple.com.

How It Works: After your payment has been processed you will be directed to a webpage that gives you your unique download link (also sent to you via email). This link will remain active for 48 hours. Simply download the file during that time.

Download Advantages: Cheaper than DVD - No shipping costs - No waiting for the title to be delivered by post.

DVD Advantages: Higher picture quality - Interactive menus and bonus features - You can watch DVDs on TVs in addition to computers.

Details of the downloads available at the moment are copied below:

The Masters Seminar: Seminars Vol. 3 (Download)

Masters SeminarThis download records Iain's teaching at the Summersdale Master's Seminar in August 2005. This landmark seminar saw some of the UK's leading martial artists - from a variety of differing arts and styles - teach together for the very first time.

On this download you'll get to see Iain Abernethy 5th dan Karate (BCA & EKGB) teach a detailed session on covering and clinching. These vitally important close-range skills are a must for all martial artists, regardless of style or system.

Aside from the simplicity of the techniques themselves, what is remarkable is that Iain clearly shows how the techniques taught are found within Naihanchi / Tekki kata! This aspect of Iain's teaching enthralled both karateka and non-karateka alike. No other download on the market shows how Naihanchi / Tekki records all aspects of fighting from a clinch. Indeed, this aspect of the kata has never even been previously presented in Iain's own works!

The techniques shown include covering, clinching, taking away the opponent's weapons, escaping from the clinch, striking from a clinch, countering an opponent's grip and more! All aspects of clinch fighting are covered and this download is a must watch for any martial artist wishing to enhance their understanding close-range combat.

Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + Shipping Costs)  - See Section 5 to get a further 25% off

Karate Joint Locks - Volume 1: Elbow-Locks (Download)

Karate's Joint Locks 1In modern times karate is most frequently practised as a limited mid- to long-range striking only system. However, it wasn't always that way! Originally karate was a holistic fighting system that covered all ranges and all martial aspects.

Whilst there is a great deal of information available on karate's modern striking methods, information on the close-range aspect of the art is very sparse. This unique series of downloads reveals the joint-locks of karate.

Through studying these downloads karateka will learn where joint-locks are recorded within the traditional kata, and also how they can expand upon the examples of the kata to yet further develop their knowledge.

This volume covers elbow-locks and shows how the elbow can be attacked and manipulated from both a standing position and from on the floor. These downloads are a must for all karateka who wish to practise karate in a holistic and pragmatic way.

Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + Shipping Costs)  - See Section 5 to get a further 25% off

Click this link to purchase: http://shop.iainabernethy.com/acatalog/downloads.html

Kata-Based-Sparring (Download)

Kata Based SparringKata and sparring are two essential elements of karate. The kata were created to record the techniques, concepts and methodology that the past masters used in civilian combat. However, in many modern Dojos sparring is now entirely based on the rules of competitive karate and therefore has little in common with the principles of traditional kata or the needs of self-protection.

In this unique DVD, karate expert Iain Abernethy returns to a traditional approach to sparring, with the kata as its foundation. Learn the building blocks of lain's kata-based-sparring concept through the numerous live drills shown on this DVD, and gain the confidence and ability to apply the combative methods of the kata when it really counts.

Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + Shipping Costs)  - See Section 5 to get a further 25% off

Important Notes: It is strongly recommended that all customers purchasing downloads have a good quality broadband internet connection due to the large file size. Whilst we have done all we can to minimize file size, even with a broadband internet connection, downloads may take a little while and patience is required.

You must also ensure that your computer has sufficient RAM to play a file of this size prior to purchase. Insufficient RAM will result in the download stalling and freezing during playback. Such playback difficulties are not the fault of the download, but the limitations of the computer in question.

No refunds can be given for downloads once the download link has been sent.

All downloads contain anti-piracy warnings and anti-piracy features. Your purchase of this of this title is taken as a guarantee that you understand unauthorised distribution of your download is a crime for which you can be personally prosecuted.

8 - Chris Denwood Seminar in Kendal on 21st of June

Kendal Chojinkai Karate present Chris Denwood Open Seminar: Understanding Mawashi-Uke and Bodyweight Manipulation

Mawashi Uke (circular response) is one of the most effective and versatile movements found in karate. It uses the theory of ‘strength in circles’ and can be pragmatically applied in many different ways. In addition, the body mechanics associated with this motion conveys a variety of subtle lessons that can be used elsewhere in the art. The first part of this seminar will break down mawashi uke and analyse it from a number of angles. Participants will not only gain a greater understanding of this technique, but will also begin to appreciate how the core strategies of karate link together so that ‘technique’ becomes somewhat irrelevant when compared to its underlying principles.

Everything we do in karate is based upon manipulating our bodyweight. To do this effectively, we need to understand the universal law of gravity and also the way in which the musculature of the body is recruited and fired effectively. The second part of this seminar will look deeper into the notion of ‘stances’ and reveal their common links. In addition, we will also discuss how the body can generate potential and how karate maximises this so that your close-range fighting strategies will no longer need to rely on distance in order to generate functional effectiveness.

Sunday the 21st of June (11am to 4 pm) at Kendal Leisure Centre, Westmorland Room, LA9 7HX

Price: £30 on the Day (check places are available) and £25 if booked in advance.

To secure places, call the E.S.K.K on 07801 531 914, email: seminars@eskk.co.uk or the host at: matthew@fightingforms.net

About the Instructor: Chris Denwood is Chief Instructor of the E.S.K.K (www.eskk.co.uk) and a senior instructor with the B.K.C. He is a columnist for Combat Magazine and a regular contributor to a number of national/international periodicals and online publications, gaining very positive reviews. A nationally qualified fitness coach and ‘Extreme Kettlebell Instructor’, Chris also specialises in the use of supplementary training tools to enhance the core principles and applications found within kata. His unique and enthusiastic approach to karate is based on revealing an adaptable way of fusing both traditional and pragmatic viewpoints of the art as a means of civilian self-protection, personal growth and positive challenge

9 - SATMA Update

SATMA LogoWork on setting up the Society of Applied Traditional Martial Arts (SATMA) is continuing to progress. I greatly appreciate your patience whilst we work to get everything in place. People are contacting us for more details almost every day and the total number of people who have registered their interest is way in excess of what we were hoping for!

As I've said before, it's good to know we are not alone in thinking that pragmatic traditionalists need such an organisation. All those people who have registered their interest will continue to receive updates as SATMA nears its launch. Those who have registered can then decide if SATMA is for them or not. If you've yet to hear about SATMA you can find more information on the following webpage:

http://www.iainabernethy.com/Society_of_Applied_Traditional_Martial_Arts.asp

To register, you simply need to send an email to satma@iainabernethy.com

A month or so ago, those who had previously registered their interest were sent details of a special podcast to update everyone all about the progress of SATMA. The podcast is only for people who have expressed an interest in SATMA and can be found on the following webpage: http://blog.iainabernethy.com/?page_id=212

To access the podcast, you will need the password. To get the password all you need to do is drop an email to satma@iainabernethy.com

Thanks once again to all who have expressed their potential interest in SATMA. Please watch your in-boxes for more information soon!

10 - Pinan Drills DVDs Update

As many of you will know, we currently have two DVDs in production on the two-man drills that I teach for the whole of the Pinan / Heian Series. These DVDs were filmed last August and unfortunately there have been a few unforeseen delays with the production process.

The good news is that I saw the rough cuts for the DVDs last week and have now approved them. I'm really happy with how the information comes across and people should have no trouble learning all the drills from the DVDs. The bonus sections on the History of the Pinan / Heian series and the 4 stage approach to kata also come across very well I feel. The titles, graphics, menu etc are now all being made and after that we will have masters from which to get all the DVDs pressed.

I appreciate everyone's patience in waiting for the DVDs, but the good news is that the finish line is now most definitely in sight! I'll have more news in the next newsletter and you can be sure I'll let you all know the instant the DVDs are finished. In the meantime, I've copied the respective blurbs below:

Iain's DVDs: http://www.iainabernethy.com/videos/videos_home.asp

The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vol. 1
Shodan, Nidan & Sandan

The Pinan /Heian kata series are without a doubt the world’s most widely practised kata series. As popular as these kata are, only a comparatively small number of karate practitioners are aware of the practical fighting techniques these kata were created to record.

This DVD series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of two-person drills that will enable karateka – of all styles and levels of experience – to return practical combat skills to the heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.

Volume 1 shows the two-person drills associated with the first three of the Pinan / Heian series (Shodan, Nidan and Sandan). Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. This includes striking, breaking balance, controlling limbs, takedowns, a variety of locks and cranks, dealing with armed opponents, grappling and throws. This DVD also includes demonstrations of the kata themselves and a discussion of the background and history of the Pinan / Heian series.

Iain Abernethy is one of the world’s leading exponents of kata application and practical karate. He has been invited to numerous countries to teach his approach and to help people return to the original combative nature of the traditional arts.

The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vol. 2
Yodan & Godan

The Pinan /Heian kata series are without a doubt the world’s most widely practised kata series. As popular as these kata are, only a comparatively small number of karate practitioners are aware of the practical fighting techniques these kata were created to record.

This DVD series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of two-person drills that will enable karateka – of all styles and levels of experience – to return practical combat skills to the heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.

Volume 2 shows the two-person drills associated with the final two Pinan / Heian kata (Yodan and Godan). This DVD also shows a series of extra drills to demonstrate how the lessons taught by the entire kata series can developed, varied and progressed. Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. The drills in this volume form a “mater class” on the principles and concepts introduced by the drills in the first volume. This DVD also includes demonstrations of the kata themselves and a discussion on the four stages of kata training.

Iain Abernethy is one of the world’s leading exponents of kata application and practical karate. He has been invited to numerous countries to teach his approach and to help people return to the original combative nature of the traditional arts.

Instructor Lineup

We are very pleased to announce that we have two of the U.K’s foremost martial artists for the course, being Dave Hazard and Russell Stutely. Both Peter Consterdine and Geoff Thompson will be instructing assisted by a line-up of the top coaches of the BCA.

Dave Hazard
: A 7th Dan in Karate with a worldwide reputation, Dave is acknowledged as one of the great technicians of the Karate world, but with a fierce fighting reputation and a karateka acknowledged by all top Japanese masters as one of the very best UK practitioners.

Dave started his Karate career in 1969 training with Sensei Eneoda, Kase, Shirai, Kawasoe and Masatoshi within the K.U.G.B as well as Nakayama. A graduate of the infamous JKA ‘Instructor’s Class’. Few foreigners survive the rigours of this course which is acknowledged as some of the hardest Karate training in the world, attendance being only by invitation.

Russell Stutely: Acknowledged as Europe’s Number 1 Pressure Point Expert, Russell has revolutionized the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pressure point techniques with the traditional martial arts.

What Russell has done with his art is to open the door for all martial artists, from whatever discipline, to massively enhance their effectiveness through pressure point applications. Boxing, grappling and, in fact, any punching and kicking systems stand to be improved with these remarkable techniques.

What Russell can give you is the ‘magic bullet’ you’ve always been looking for - it’s like having a genuine ‘Vulcan Death Grip’ These techniques are real ‘force multipliers’.

Peter and GeoffPeter Consterdine & Geoff Thompson: Hopefully, we don’t need too much of an introduction, however both Geoff and I recognize that people expect our usual high level input to the course and they won't be disappointed. This is an opportunity that we both look forward to, for us to get in front of our BCA and non-BCA people on the course and inspire and motivate as well as instruct.

If you read the testimonials on the BCA website you will get a real feel for the friendliness you can expect and the openness displayed by all the instructors. Everyone is made to feel welcome and this is a course where no-one will expect you to be bowing and scraping but where we are simply ‘first amongst equals’. Whether you want to learn to ‘hit like a train’, or be motivated to actually change your life, you will get this from Geoff and myself.

Geoff and I will have presentations on various subjects in the evening Lecture Theatre sessions and are always on hand to answer your questions and help with your techniques.

BCA Coaches: We always ensure that the instructor to student ratio is high and throughout the weekend you will also have some of the U.K.s foremost combat coaches. You should, hopefully be familiar with our instructor cadre.

The support line-up includes; Iain Abernethy • John Skillen • Alan Peasland • Peter Lakin.

In their own right these are some of the most sought after seminar instructors both in the U.K and Internationally. They are some of the BCA’s frontline people and you will have numerous opportunities to pick their brains and plug into their unique skills.

The course will be held Thursday 29th October to Sunday 1st November and will include ALL accommodation, meals and training. Lilleshall is one of the finest sports training venues in the U.K.

Having seen exactly how wide-ranging the upper levels of the courses are (covers all aspects of conflict and security) I feel sure these courses will be of interest to many of you. It's also worth emphasising these courses are open via distance learning wherever you are based in the world.

Message from Peter Consterdine:

Hello All

Just a quick line to let you know that you can now get access to the above Prospectus and Franchise brochure. You may already have accessed this from another source or one of my Newsletters, so apologies if you already have them.

If not, you can go to www.britishcombat.co.uk, scroll down the Home Page to NEWSFLASHES and you'll see a poster and link to the two brochures. I hope they make sense to you, but there is a lot of detail there, so I'm sure you'll have questions.

13 - Urban Confidence Seminar: 19th September in East Sussex (new date)

This is a unique event to be held on 19th of September in East Sussex. Basically it will be a combination of the psychological confidence-enhancing techniques of Simon Jordan, the UK’s top Confidence Coach & the self defence and fighting techniques of Urban Krav Maga.

For the martial artist the course will offer practical and direct defences against the 10 most common street attacks, i.e.

1. One person pushes, hands to chest, which is normally followed by the pushee striking first, to the head.
2. A swinging punch to the head.
3. A front clothing grab, one handed, followed by punch to the head.
4. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a head butt.
5. A front clothing grab, two hands, followed by a knee to the groin.
6. A bottle, glass, or ashtray to the head.
7. A lashing kick to groin/lower legs.
8. A broken bottle/glass jabbed to face.
9. A slash with knife, most commonly a 3 to 4" lock blade knife or kitchen utility knife.
10. A grappling style head lock.

Plus the coaching to afford you the confidence to know that you can do it in the dojo and make it work in the street.

These are serious people - Simon Jordan has coached people like Richard Branson and the Urban Krav Maga DVD set has been praised as one of the most practical training tools on the market – so this seminar is well worth a try.

Check out the website here (you can book up directly through the site): www.urbanconfidence.co.uk
