Homeschoolers across the country have ended the year on rather a busy note, in the wake of the publication of the draft Basic Education Amendment Bill (BELA Bill) by the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
If you haven’t yet heard about it, please give this matter your urgent attention and take action by sending in a personal letter of objection.
In short, the BELA Bill proposes to restrict the rights of parents to choose the form of education in their children’s best interests. It therefore potentially violates the SA Constitution and other international human rights instruments.

And on that same page and below, you will find links to various templates and fact sheets published by the Pestalozzi Trust to help you formulate a letter.
Although the official date for submissions was 10 November 2017, home educators have been assured that late submissions will still be accepted and considered until the review process draws to a close.

Please take action and speak up for freedom in education for home educators.
One day in the future, you want to be able to tell your children and grandchildren that you were proactive in this battle. The mainstream media has also given this matter a huge amount of attention as the BELA Bill also affect schools and seeks to strip the powers of school governing bodies.
Since insufficient time for public consultation was given, it is important for there to be a large body of evidence (letters of objection) as proof of the lack of consultation and proof of the public’s outcry against this draft bill. If the Bill gets steamrollered through Parliament, there will need to be a court case and this evidence will be vital for a successful outcome in that instance.
To assist home educators with drafting letters of submission, the Pestalozzi Trust has published the following documents and BELA Bill Submission Guidelines:

| Keep Building on the Good Things
Finally, in closing…before you get into the crazy time that the holidays and the festive season brings, take a moment to reflect on 2017 and to be thankful for everything that was good and that went right.
Dwelling on the negatives won’t get you anywhere but into the deep hole of despair, so focus on the positives and make a plan to keep building on those good things in your life, your home and your homeschooling.
Look back on the small daily accomplishments that you and your children have achieved – it might be simple things like learning to tie a shoe-lace, being better organised, starting a new hobby, accomplishments in sport or cultural activities, acts of kindness, learning better manners and such things.
Education is not only measured by the number of pages that you completed in books!
This will be our last newsletter of 2017 as we go into our busy season and so we bid you farewell till 2018.
