Source of Strength by Sheldon Bass

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

It is in acknowledging my weakness before God that I receive His strength. When I wait upon the Lord, in eager expectation of His glorious salvation, I aspire to, and attain His inexhaustible strength.

What does it mean to "Wait upon the Lord?" The Hebrew word for 'wait', "qavah" is from the root "to bind together by twisting," and means to patiently expect. When all of our hope is so entwined in Christ Jesus, that faith becomes our assurance. This is the actual receiving of God's strength right now. We call what shall be as though it already were so. It is through this eager certainty that we receive His omnipotent help in the here and now: His strength, peace and joy.

Psalm 31:24 fits the meaning well. "Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD."

When I am fully convinced of God's promises and constantly envision them in my possession, I have my eagle's wings, and I have my renewed strength and hope and every promised benefit of the Lord. Take hold of the hand of the heavenly Savior from Galilee. You shall run and soar with His abundance of strength—today!
