A New Nature – by Stephanie M. White

Jesus answered and said unto him, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus saith unto Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?” Jesus answered, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. THAT WHICH IS BORN OF THE FLESH IS FLESH; AND THAT WHICH IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT IS SPIRIT.” John 3:3-6 KJV

That which is born of flesh is flesh; that which is born of Spirit is Spirit. What was Jesus articulating? Why did Jesus say we have to be “born again”? Being born again is a fundamental precept that we must understand. Jesus tells us that we must be born again because the first time we were born it was simply a birth of the flesh; it was not Spiritual. If we desire to see the kingdom of God we must be born again – something Spiritual must take place. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit; there are two natures in every born-again believer – two natures that must be recognized and understood. Once you receive Christ as your personal Lord and Savior the Bible then refers to you as being “born again”. Something new has taken place; something new is given life in you. Our new nature is our Spiritual nature; it’s perfect because of Christ. When we received Christ He gave us the gift of His Spirit. We now have Christ in us – this means that we can now do what He would do. We will become more and more like Christ as we feed our new nature. The Word of God is the fuel for this nature. We’ll operate in our Spiritual nature when we abide in God’s Word. We must fill ourselves with the Word if we want to walk in our new Spiritual nature.
