Be a Better Writer--Devotionals
By Jan Ackerson

FaithWriters who enter the weekly writing challenge might have noticed that fiction and poetry tend to win recognition more often than nonfiction (primarily devotionals and Bible studies). There may be several reasons for this, but primary among them, I think, is that devotional writing tends to be dry and uncreative. It’s difficult to write a devotional that will catch the judges’ eyes—and if your writing isn’t grabbing the judges, it won’t be grabbing your intended readers, either.

Here’s my working definition of devotional for this lesson: a short piece of writing, focused on one or two scriptures, intended to inspire or to teach a lesson. I’m differentiating devotional from Bible study, which is a more in-depth analysis of several verses or passages.

If a person has been a Christian for any length of time, she has probably read many, many devotionals. That’s the first problem for a devotional writer—finding something to write that doesn’t register with the reader as something she has read before. Devotionals tend to be riddled with “Christianese.” This website examines the problem of using too much Christian jargon, and it links to several similar articles. If you don’t have the time to read the article, I’ll summarize: your Christian audience will have read those words and phrases hundreds or thousands of times. There’s little reason, then, for them to keep reading. Yeah, yeah, I’ve seen this already. Moving on. Additionally—there’s little of your own writing, if your devotional is riddled with Christian jargon—and if you’ve entered your devotional in the writing challenge, it will be rated lower for the creativity criterion if there is too much Christian jargon.

Moreover, your non-Christian readers will be turned off by Christianese. Christian jargon feels to them like an insider’s secret handshake. They don’t get it, and it further distances them from a world that they are not yet a part of. If you want your devotional to reach non-Christians, you have to avoid language that they won’t understand. By all means, keep the Christian message, but if your intended audience is non-Christians, you need to write it in their language.

So—how do you write a devotional that will grab readers? Here are my suggestions:

1. Obviously, avoid Christianese. Look through your piece for familiar phrases (washed in the blood, personal Lord and savior) and ask yourself—Have I ever read that phrase before? If you have, then find another way to express that concept.

2. Give your devotional a great hook. Do not begin with a definition, a quote, or a rhetorical question. These devices are often taught by high school teachers as good ways to start a piece of writing. They are not—they are overused and clichéd, and you can do better. Start with something new that your reader has never seen before: a true story about you or someone else, a made-up anecdote about a person needing to learn the lesson that you’re about to teach, a shocking statement or statistic.

Incidentally, I don’t generally recommend that you start right off with the scripture that you’ll be introducing in your devotional. Readers’ eyes tend to skip over blocked-off or italicized text at the beginning of an article, and get right to the devotional. If you want to be sure that the scripture gets read, embed it in the body of your devotional.

3. Don’t think that because you’re writing nonfiction, you have to give up characters, dialog, and creativity. People are social creatures; we like to read about other people. You can include great storytelling in your devotional, illustrating the lesson you’re trying to teach. Many devotionals tend to be too abstract or theoretical, never really reaching the flesh and blood level.

4. Don’t abandon humor. Of course, humor will not be appropriate in every devotional, but neither do devotionals have to be dry and ponderous.

5. Your language should be rich in the same kinds of things that make fiction writing interesting: metaphor, imagery, symbolism, and the like. There’s no reason why a devotional can’t include compelling writing.

6. Give your devotional an unusual structure. The most common structure is something like this: opening scripture, anecdote, lesson or application, prayer. See what you can do to shake that up.

7. Just as you should give your devotional a great hook, you should also give it a great ending. End with a strong image, an emotional appeal, a humorous statement, or “the rest of the story.”

When I was writing for the challenge, my forte was fiction, but I wrote a devotional called After the Unspeakable Minute one week when the topic called for inspirational or devotional writing. I’m linking to it here not because it’s the world’s best devotional, but as part of your homework.

One of the things that irritates me is waiting. But today i have realised the importance and need to be patient. Doubting God's Love
by Taylor Cummings

1 John 4:19, "We love each other because he loved us first."

How many of you know the song, "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know"? This is a song that many children learn at a young age. When I was little, I remember learning this song myself.

1 John 4:19 has been on my mind the last day or two. I keep thinking about God's love. After growing up hearing about how much God loves me, I often brush off hearing about His love as if it's not a big deal, but in actuality, it is a HUGE deal!

Something was brought to my attention this week. I was doubting God's love for me.

This may sound crazy, but when I took a look at things, I realized that this was the case.

There is a preacher named Joyce Meyer who said a few things on this subject, and I believe they're worth repeating. She asked everyone, "How many of you believe that God loves you?" Everyone clapped and cheered in agreement, but then she said something shocking. She said, "No, you don't." Then she shared something that God had spoken to her heart: that if people really knew how much He loved them, they'd act a whole lot differently than they do.

As I listened to this sermon, I realized how true that was, but this week, it became even more clear to me.

There were moments this week when I struggled emotionally and wondered where God was and why He wasn't doing things the way I wanted Him to. I was lonely. Some disappointing things occurred, and I found myself feeling unloved and unwanted... even though I knew in my head that wasn't true.

Today, God stirred in my heart to write this devotional. He reminded me of another thing Joyce Meyer shared about Jesus' disciple John, the author of the Gospel of John. In the book of John, John refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loves. I don't know about you, but when I first heard this, it almost sounded like John was full of himself. What Joyce said, though, was that Peter always went around saying how much he loved Jesus, but he was the one who denied Him. John, however, was the disciple who actually was there at the cross when Jesus died. She talks about how when we know how much God really loves us, it strengthens us.

When I ponder 1 John 4:19, I realize that when I don't know how much God loves me, it is impossible for me to love other people. When I was so down in the dumps, feeling alone, I didn't reach out to others and love them. Rather, I wanted God to send someone to love me. I was self-absorbed, and all my strength was sucked out of me while I remained in that pit.

Thankfully, God didn't leave me there to rot. Instead, He began reminding me of His love for me. He reminded me that I am the apple of His eye. He impressed upon my heart how precious I am to Him, and as He continued to pour His love out on me, I began to receive strength so I could finally love again.
No longer did I see me not getting my way as Him trying to hold out on me. I now could see how He knows what is best, and if what I'm asking for is not His very best, He isn't going to give it to me. It isn't that He is withholding blessings from me. He just sees the bigger picture and knows what will be for my very best.

When I finally had my focus straight again and stopped buying into the lies of Satan that God didn't really want what was best for me, I was delivered from my pit of despair.

Maybe John knew something that we need to learn for ourselves... how much Jesus loves us. It can no longer be the simple thought of, "Oh yeah... I know God loves me." We need to claim His love and realize that it's real.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I realized this week that I had started to doubt Your love for me. I looked at my circumstances to base Your love off of rather than looking at You. Thank You for reminding me of how much You really do love me. Help anyone else who feels alone, unwanted, or unloved, and give them revelation of Your love as well. Then, help them take that love and share it with a lost and hurting world. In Jesus' Name.

Amen.

Develop the Long Term Perspective
by Susan Barnes

"You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine ". Psalm 4:7

During a drought in an agricultural community, it is hard to imagine a greater joy than rain or imagine a greater blessing than a bountiful harvest. Yet David in this Psalm is saying exactly that. He has discovered a greater joy than these things.

Bountiful harvests and material blessings give us an external joy whereas God can give us an inner joy that has nothing to do with the physical situations in our lives. One of the ways to cultivate this joy is to develop the long term perspective. "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18).

Regardless of our current circumstances God has already done so much for us in Jesus. We may have to agree with Paul and say we are sometimes perplexed, but hopefully we can also say we are not in despair (2 Corinthians 4:8).

The cross gives us a certain hope. God really does love us and Jesus died to provide a way for us to be abundantly blessed. "No human mind has conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Corinthians 2:9). This thought alone is enough to make us joyful, as well as eternally thankful.

Susan, an Australian pastor's wife, loves to enrich people's understanding of God. She regularly writes devotional thoughts on Bible passages, book reviews and inspirational articles which she posts on her blog.

Together We Spread the Gospel

We wanted to remind you that FaithWriters is unique in its dual purpose: We are writers and evangelists. On FaithWriters, you'll find fiction, non-fiction, poems, devotionals, Bible studies and other articles written from a Christian perspective; content you will not find on a site that is strictly evangelistic in nature, or on a general writing site. With so much variety, we receive many visitors who might not go to a traditional evangelism site. Many may not even be looking for Jesus, but Jesus still meets them when they visit. In our experience, God tends to find people where they are in their life. This may be while they are reading your article about marriage or divorce. It might happen when they read about struggles with sin or your fictional story. What we are saying is to keep on submitting your various pieces that could only be authored by you. You never know who will be touched and moved by your work.

The internet is an extremely important field ready for harvest. The enemy knows this and he is working hard on the internet to lead people down the wrong path. As followers of Jesus we can make a difference by publishing the true message and pointing people to Jesus. Men and women from over 225 countries are drawn to the FaithWriters site by the various articles on the end of our virtual fishing pole. Many have no other way than the internet to find out about Jesus. They are able to learn a lot from our site and the sister-sites to which we have provided links. Many click on the sites we link to that offer in-depth information on Jesus because they are able to get more information in their native language.

Hundreds of people from around the world have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. Plus, as mentioned, we refer many people to other sites to help answer their questions and accommodate their language. We know it is not about just about numbers. We also know that accepting Jesus and confessing Him is just where it starts. It is honor to consider the fact that God would use us in this way. The numbers are encouraging for us though and we will love encouragement.

We contact every person who leaves an email address, and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country.
Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two minute video on how Kimberly found God on the internet.
