Something Worth Reading

E.E. Cummings style, FaithWriters member Jim McWhinnie entered the following poem in the Weekly Writing Challenge for the topic of “Outstanding.” Since taking first place in April, 2011, “this cathedral for boys, this cathedral of dreams has been read over 3,000 times. Take a moment to ponder this “outstanding” piece. Then click on the link below and leave a comment for Jim.

Enjoy!

this cathedral for boys, this cathedral of dreams

By
Jim McWhinnie
in the summertime,
within the ivy-covered walls,
upon the sun-drenched grass, the green, green grass
where full grown boys lived out my dreams,
in nine inning shares of timelessness,
to hear the thunder of Ted Williams’ bat,
to watch the smooth, smooth stride of Willie Mays,
to sit in awe of lads once like me,
but who grew up somewhere to become so much more,
these mythic figures of a mythic game,
a game once began on sandy backlots,
now continued on fields in majestic ballparks,
they are all grown up these once little boys,
grown-up beyond the reach of mortals who wear tailored grey suits as they go to work,
they live in realms of near perfection,
they walk in air beyond our own,
they are the best of the best there are
and maybe even,
oh, time will tell
the best of all who will ever be.
oh, how i love this holy place,
the sounds,
the crrraack of the ball sending the left fielder to the wall,
the pop of a Koufax fastball for a call, Strike Three!
the vendor pitching, ”Hot Dogs, Git your red hot, Hot Dogs!”
the rising roar of a crowd when the game’s on the line,
the out-of-tune singing when its seventh inning time.
oh, how i have loved this old, holy place,
this cathedral for boys, this cathedral of dreams,
this place most outstanding
of all places to be.

God Speaks Contest    Continued beyond 5-1-13

How many things are more important than the Word of God?

You can help us promote God’s Word to the world and be in the running for paid writing work by the contest sponsor, plus $500 in Biblical library upgrades.
We would really appreciate your entry into this contest. It only requires up to 750 words, just like the Writing Challenge – completely doable! Please do not wait until the last minute. Enter today!  God Speaks is open until we have 25 entries or the sponsor or FaithWriters calls the contest.

An example to spark your creativity…You might write a dialogue in which one believer reads the Bible and one does not. The non-reader is constantly falling prey to false doctrine and does not understand why.
Read an actual GOD SPEAKS SAMPLE ENTRY.
Testimony Contest

We have raised the number of testimonies we’re looking for! We will now be awarding 40 entries a spot in the Testimony Book, to be published within a few months of the contest completion. We have also enlisted the abilities of one of our very talented members to write the beginning and end of the book.

This will be a very powerful book that will seek the lost and encourage the found. Publishing is already set up and an aggressive marketing plan is in place.

You can also submit a cover idea for a chance at a $200 prize.

Testimonies selected will receive royalties, both here and in heaven. Someone out there will benefit from your testimony. Write it down and submit it today!

Do you really want to people to find
and purchase your book?

Gravity is a free e-book written by Michael Edwards and is available at all of the large internet book sellers. Even though it is free and is running 4 1/2 stars at Amazon, it is still immersed in an ocean of books and invisible to many.

Most members publish their books themselves to save the initial cost of going with a self-publishing company. But it may be costing you more in the long run. I have personally discovered that even if you are on Amazon, and doing whatever you can to promote your book, free or not, it might as well be a sunken treasure at the bottom of that ocean of books.

FaithWriters currently offers (free to Platinum members) one of the most expansive marketing programs available for the money. This should not be your entire marketing plan, of course, but it is a great way to send up some flares so people can find you. With Platinum membership, we heavily promote your book across our site with multiple ads, exposing it to readers who make up our 400,000 page views per month. Plus, we also promote your book on FaithReaders.com,
FaithWriters Magazine and FaithWriters for Kids, if applicable.

Shooting up flares has really helped my book. It has been downloaded tens of thousands of times on Amazon. Go HERE to learn more.

Have you written a "page turner"?

Calling all fiction writers! The Seventh Annual Page Turner Contest is something you must look into. All that’s required is the first chapter of your completed or just-started novel, along with a synopsis of the entire story. This could be just what you need to spur you on to finishing that book! Deadline is October 31st, and winners will be announced in December.

First Prize $800, Editing of Manuscript, and more!

The Great Multitude Daily Devotional
Written by Thousands, Inspired by Revelations 7:9-12

"After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Working at FaithWriters and interacting with visitors from 217 countries (at last check) makes the world seem much smaller. It's a great reminder of the Great Multitude mentioned in Revelations. We are getting a small glimpse of believers around the globe. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.

FaithWriter's Daily Devotional is displayed on a large
number of websites around the world. Not only does it honor God but it gives the writers worldwide exposure at churches and other Christian venues. It offers the writer a great potential to be picked up for other work. Postings now include a Hire This Writer Link.

We are currently accepting ready to post (EDITED) submissions from members for the Great Multitude. Non-edited material will be rejected. If you live outside of the USA we especially want a devotional from you. Click here for instructions and an archived list of the devotionals already posted: THE GREAT MULTITUDE DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Fishers of Men

FaithWriters is unique in it's dual purpose. We accept fiction, non-fiction, poems, devotionals, Bible studies and other articles written from a Christian perspective. You will not find all of these articles on a site that is strictly evangelistic in nature. Therefore we may receive many visitors who would not go to a traditional evangelism site. Many may not even be looking for Jesus but he still meets them when they visit. In our experience, God tends to find people where they are at in their life. This may be while they are reading your article about marriage or divorce. It might happen when they read about struggles with sin or your fictional article. What we are saying is to keep on submitting your various pieces authored by you.

Men and women from over 200 countries are attracted to the FaithWriters site by your various articles on the end of our fishing pole. Many have no other way than the internet to find out about Jesus. They are able to learn a lot from our site and the various sites we have provided links too.

To date, at least 290 people have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly on our FaithWriters. We know it is not about just about numbers. We also know that accepting Jesus in their heart and confessing Him is where it starts. It is  honor to consider the fact that God would use us in this way.

We contact every person who leaves an email address, and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country.

Watch this short two minute video on how Kimberly found God on the internet.

Happy Mothers Day

"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb" - Psalm 139:13

It's certainly our prayer that Mother's Day is a time of celebration for you as you lavish love on your mom. But we realize there are some -- maybe many -- of you who will find it difficult to get through this annual holiday. Maybe your mother passed away sometime over the past year and you will be grieving your first Mother's Day without her. Maybe your mom lives hours away and you'll have to settle for a phone call instead of a hug. Or maybe you and your mom are estranged, or simply don't get along. Maybe Mother's Day brings up bad or hurtful memories or feelings.

According to the verse above, before you took your first breath, God knit you together in your mother's womb, preparing you for a purpose only you can fulfill. Whether this day will bring you joy or sorrow, remember that God used your mother to bring you into this world. This month, take a moment to thank God -- and your mom if you're able -- for the precious gift of life.

Happy Mother's Day to all of our FaithWriters moms! May you realize the true treasure you are, and may your day be filled with laughter, love, and an abundance of chocolate.

God in the ICU
Dave Walker
When an anesthetist started praying with his patients in the Intensive Care Unit, suddenly his practice was transformed. As he relates his story in the context, first of a South Africa transitioning to democracy and then in the Middle East you will hear stories of a God who responds to prayer in ways that are uniquely His. This has the drama of hi-tech medicine, the poignancy of lives that are hanging in the balance, the human touch of a doctor who is trying to understand a God who does not always respond as he would like Him to and above all the inspiration and encouragement of a God who loves us enough to hear us when we pray and to be with us in our moments of deepest need.
