Message from the Director

Night Out is quickly approaching. What is it, you ask? Night Out is a national event that occurs on the first Tuesday of August. For over 30 years, Seattle has participated in this celebration that is part community-building and part community partnerships.

The focus is to have neighbors meet one another, to activate the streets, and to make our neighborhoods a bit safer and our communities a bit stronger.

Because Night Out is such an easy and enjoyable way to get to know your neighbors, we saw this as a perfect opportunity to expand the possibilities and get more people involved. Knowing our neighborhoods and communities are diverse, we worked with the Seattle Police Department and had the invitation for Night Out translated into 10 languages. Those languages - Amharic to Tagalog, Spanish to Korean, and more - are available online.

If you are interested in hosting an event, inviting your neighbors, or just learning more, please go to our blog. We are happy to help build community, step by step, and block by block. See you at Night Out! I’ll be bringing stuffed strawberries to the potluck!

- Kathy Nyland, Director of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods
