Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin. Romans 6.6.

If anyone desires to be delivered from the power of sin and not to be in bondage to it, he must overcome his body. In Romans 6.6 the apostle tells us how our Lord delivers us from the tyranny of the body. The Lord Jesus took our old man to the cross with Him, so as to do away with this our body of sin. “Done away” (or “destroyed”) in the original Greek means “to render idle, inactive, inoperative, to cause to cease.” By what He has accomplished on the cross, the Lord Jesus renders our body of sin inoperative and inactive so that we are no longer in bondage to sin. The body still exists; it is not destroyed in the sense of being annihilated. It simply finds that its lusts which are due to its physiological structure are disabled and withered by the Lord. We all may overcome through the cross.
