Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: lo, I have gained other five talents. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant. Matthew 25.20, 21.

The extra five talents earned does not represent success, it instead represents the goodness and faithfulness of the servant. By outward appearance, Stephen (Acts 6, 7) might have seemed to have been a failure, yet in spiritual reality he had done a good and faithful work. So if a cup of cold water is given for Christ’s sake (this is faithfulness), it shall be rewarded. To be faithful means to do it for the Lord. For whom do we really work? Oftentimes we seek for success, not realizing that if success is not for the Lord it is but wood, hay, and stubble. The Lord looks for our faithfulness.
