“It doesn't make any difference to me if my great-grandfather was an ape,” said the university student. The minister answered, “I bet it would have made a BIG difference to your great-grandmother.”

Evolution. The concept can lead to behavior which is no better than an ape's. If there is no justice in the universe, no accountability to a Creator, why live a moral life? That question makes a huge impact on society. Paul warned young Timothy to avoid the “opposition of science, falsely so called” (I Tim. 6:20). Following a false assumption can be deadly.

When I watched the terrible news of the 1999 Columbine school massacre, I realized that if I truly believed I descended from an ape my behavior might not be any better than the shooters, Dylon Klebold and Eric Harris. I hope it would, but given the right stressors and circumstances, who knows? Darwin's theory leaves me with nothing to spur respect for others, or even for my own life. It leads to a “grab all the gusto you can get” philosophy of the soft drink commercial, which is ultimately selfish and empty.

However, when I read in Genesis that I am created in God's image, I lift up my head and aspire to do godly things. Psalm 8 says: What is man that you are mindful of him? You have crowned him with glory and honor and made him to have dominion over all creation including all the animals, fish, and birds. This inspires me to honor God's creation and to obey the lord's commandment to “Love one another.”

Father, the entrance of Your Word gives light. Let me walk in love toward them that are without and help me to be a light in this dark world.
