Financial Products for Good series: Guarantees
By Jana Svedova

Last month, we debuted our series "Financial Products for Good" by examining Social Impact Bonds. In the second part of this series, we examine investment guarantees and recent findings from a study on the application of these structures which Amit Bouri, CEO of the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), called “an extremely underutilized but powerful tool” in impact investing.

A guarantee has been a hot topic amongst impact investors recently. The credit enhancement tool has seen increased adoption in impact investment deals, often leveraging additional capital (in one case leveraging an additions $40 million for a non-profit in Baltimore!). This article covers the design, benefits and challenges of using guarantees in investment deals.

The GIIN reports USD $114 billion of impact investment under management in their annual impact investor survey.

Michael and Susan Dell are deploying another $1 billion (on top of their $1.3 billion since 1999) to invest in innovative and riskier impact investment deals.

Municipal bond digital marketplace Neighborly raises $25 million.

Impact PLC will become the UK's first publicly listed impact investment trust on the London Stock Exchange, seeking to raise $150 million.

Welcome S3i interns!

May is always a busy month at Sauder S3i. This month, we welcomed to our summer interns to our impact investing and CCS iHub teams.

Our impact investing interns (Elise, Loli, Mario, Oliver, Varun) will be busy working on research projects for impact investors in Western Canada. Past projects have ranged across many topics, from healthcare, water and sanitation, to homelessness, affordable housing, and sustainable agriculture. The CCS iHub interns (Arielle, Audrey, Brett, Farwah, Gracia, Mia, Michelle) will be working directly with the founders of the 6 CCS iHub social ventures, taking responsibility for projects like business development, building customer engagement and marketing strategies, identifying operational gaps and more!

Check out their profiles here. Over the coming months, we will be profiling the students, their journeys, and what they're learning. Stay tuned!
