"Responsible Investing" is Simply "Investing": A Recap of RIA Conference 2017

On the eve of President Trump’s announcement of USA’s role in the Paris Climate Agreement, investors – institutional and retail alike – met in downtown Vancouver to discuss the state of responsible investing, from one end of the spectrum in public market investing to the other end in private equity impact investments. One message was common across all the workshops and plenaries: Where does the line between Responsible Investing and just “investing” lie? The line is becoming increasingly blurred: in today’s markets, what makes economic sense simply makes social/environmental sense as well. This article summarizes several key insights from the conference.

In our third instalment of the Financial Products for Good series, we examine equity crowdfunding. Check out our previous two articles on social impact bonds and guarantees.

Crowdfunding, in its simplest form, harnesses the wide reach of the Internet to allow individuals or firms to raise small amounts of money from a large number of people to fund projects and ventures. Unlike other forms of crowdfunding, equity crowdfunding allows investors to acquire equity in a project, instead of token rewards or nothing at all. We examine the design of this tool, the regulatory environment, and recent trends.

10 Enlightening Days In Uganda
