Disruptive vs Grassroots impact
"Impact" is exciting, but let's think about "impact"
By Bruno Lam

In his blog, Alexander Osterwalder, the mastermind behind the Business Model Canvas, identifies a truth about innovation: “Innovation has become a meaningless buzzword.” So has “impact."

Osterwalder argues that successful companies don't focus solely on disruptive technologies to innovate; it’s also about the smaller, incremental changes a company can implement to sustain growth.

The same applies to impact. Do we want large, transformational, disruptive "Impact"? Absolutely. But by solely focusing on finding the proverbial “next Facebook” of social ventures, are we ignoring the thousands of traditional businesses that can create impact as well? For example, by implementing changes to their operations, businesses can contribute to climate change by reducing their carbon footprint.

Investing in smaller-scale traditional businesses might not be as exciting as investing in early-stage, disruptive start-ups, but impact investors should not dismiss a small business' ability to contribute to global issues.
