Happy Holidays!
The year in review

Happy Holidays from all of us at SauderS3i!

2016 was an eventful year, to say the least. Dramatic changes around the world have had a profound effect on all sectors. Social innovation and impact investing were no exception. At SauderS3i, we believe in using business tools to build inclusive, resilient, and friendly communities. Our work contributes to building the impact investing ecosystem in western Canada.

Impact investing has come a long way over the last 10 years as a niche in finance to a trend that has been adopted by some of the biggest funds and institutions. While impact investing still has a long way to go before it becomes the norm, 2016 was a big year for the sector. Here are a few of the biggest impact investing stories globally and in Canada.

Global impact investing activity intensifies
According to the Global Impact Investing Network, the size of impact investing sector reached $77.4 billion; Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Jack Ma and 17 others invested $1 billion into cleantech companies; and major investment firms respond to Paris Climate Agreements and Vancouver’s GLOBE16.

Canadian policy shifts towards impact investing
This year, the federal government piloted Canada’s first health impact bond; led efforts in the Redesigning Development Finance initiative by the World Economic Forum; launched a call for a steering group to guide Canada’s Social Innovation & Social Finance Strategy. In B.C., the social enterprise sector outpaced the larger economy.
