Gamma Rho Dances Raises $70,000
The PIKE Dance Marathon Team
PIKE & Kappa Raise $70,000 with Record Participation Rate

The end of winter quarter marked a special time for Northwestern as NU Dance Marathon occurred. 49 brothers of Gamma Rho participated in the charity event, in which participants dance for 30 straight hours. Gamma Rho paired up their fundraising efforts with sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. Together the two organizations raised more than $70,000. The primary beneficiary for Dance Marathon this year was Gigi’s Playhouse, a nonprofit network of Down’s Syndrome achievement centers. The secondary beneficiary for this year’s Dance Marathon was the Evanston Community Foundation, an organization that funds various grants in the local community. It was the 20th year running the it was chosen as the secondary beneficiary.

Joe Farrell ('14) and Marco Alvarez ('14) served as the leaders for Gamma Rho’s DM team. Joe Farrell, an outgoing senior, shared his thoughts - “It was incredibly rewarding to finish our fourth year of DM as part of a class that has been so dedicated throughout our time at Northwestern. We had six seniors dance this year, and our fundraising again was one of the top three teams. I am proud that we have achieved that the last four years. Hopefully we’ve passed our commitment to DM on to the younger guys because it is an integral part of being a PIKE.”
DM is a wonderful way to bring people together for a great cause, as Marco Alvarez agreed saying, “I felt especially bonded with the class and the older brothers who did it after. In Block 10 when we were all exhausted, we were finally able to realize the impact our dollars made to the whole fundraising effort, and that is an experience that I want to keep reliving and encourage others to also experience. I want to continue the bonding and rewarding tradition in Gamma Rho of having a large turnout in DM by keeping the excitement around DM high.”

Gamma Rho thanks all the alumni who donated to the team this year.

Gamma Rho Scholarship Endowment Continues to Grow
The Gamma Rho Endowment Fund which is used for student scholarship and expenses for Pike University is now in its second year. The fund is managed by a highly qualified team at the PIKE Foundation. The fund, which exclusively benefits Gamma Rho, is comprised of two accounts, the PIKE University Fund which has a balance of $100,000 and the John Jones Memorial Fund which has a balance of $38,000. The PIKE U fund is used to offset the expenses of sending Gamma Rho undergraduates to three unique PIKE U events each year including the summer conference. Fees for registration, travel, lodging, and meals can exceed $10,000 annually for the chapter. The Alumni Association has set out with a goal to achieve a balance of $250k in the PIKE U fund in order to fully cover these costs as the annual dividend is typically 4%.
